In preparation for the 1st round of the NBA Playoffs, I watched the movie, "Just Wright". It's a romantic comedy, with a sports theme starring Queen Latifah and Common. Queen Latifah plays a character, Lesley Wright, who works as a trainer/rehab specialist. Common is Scott McKnight, the star guard for the New Jersey Nets.
**** Did you know I submitted a photo and was selected to be a paid extra for this movie, but couldn't shoot because I had to prepare for a work project? I was being sent out of the country for a customer and need to prepare otherwise, I would've been a part of shooting for 3 days. Talk about a missed opportunity!
As I watched the movie, I was amused at how real it is. I've seen how women search and ogle the family/WAGs section of the stands. I've seen the envy in their eyes. I've seen the gold-digging, unscrupulous types try to con players and I've seen players fall for the con. I've sat in the family section for years. It's a quiet sister-hood, for obvious reasons.
I also know what it's like to deal with and work with an athlete who's rehabbing an injury. It's not sunshine and roses. I can't describe the emotion I felt when I saw Queen Latifah's character throw ice onto an injured Scott McKnight. Many years ago frustration overtook me, and I threw water. It's tough trying to get someone to get up and move, when they're depressed and broken. "Tough" isn't even the word. Those times can be downright awful. When you throw water on a 7 footer, who doesn't want to get up, you better be ready for a fight...
I found the movie to be funny, since it's the closest the New Jersey Nets are going to get to the NBA Playoffs this year. I enjoyed watching cameos from Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard, Rajon Rondo, etc. The movie may not have won any awards, but for a girl who loves romantic comedies and sports ~ "Just Wright" was "just right"!

Wizards try for 2 wins in a row on Wednesday against the Magic
The Washington Wizards defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers yesterday, 115-100, and captured their 1st victory on the road. Now, the Wizards can reflect on their 1-25 road record as they prepare to battle the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night.
The Orlando Magic were in action on Sunday also, and they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers by a margin of 14 at home. The final score of that game was 89-75. Magic star, Dwight Howard, came up big with 31 points and 13 boards.
Let's go ahead and state the obvious. The Orlando Magic will prove to be a more significant challenge to the Wizards than the Cavs, even though the jury is still out as to whether the mult-team trade between the Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, and Washington Wizards made the Magic a better team.
**** This picture was taken at the last meeting between the Magic and the Wizards in DC. Ironically, both Rashard Lewis and Gilbert Arenas are exiting this picture on opposite sides. "Shortly" (aka days) after this game, both players would be traded to the other team.
Most likely, "NO ~ the Wizards won't win 2 in a row on the road."
However, stranger things have happened. Don't forget... The NBA is where "amazing happens".

Let's face it. Sunday's Wizards v Cavs match-up was one to watch for all the wrong reasons. For the same reason people "rubberneck" at car accidents, people tuned into the Wizards v Cavs game.
Wednesday's Wizards v Magic match-up will be intriguing if not to see if/how Gilbert Arenas and Rashard Lewis play against their former squads. Rashard Lewis missed his 2nd straight game with a sore knee on Sunday, and I haven't heard if he'll return for Wednesday's game. Gilbert Arenas, the former poster boy, for the Washington Wizards has had his scoring drop 50% since the trade to Orlando. He only averages 8.1 ppg now, but now (i.e. to be fair) he's coming off the bench.

Magic defeat the Wizards thanks to Dwight Howard's last shot
I came back to the DC area after hanging out with my family for Thanksgiving. It was an early morning. I was up at 4AM and slept most of the afternoon away, once I made it back. I had a feeling my friend, Mandy would call about the Orlando Magic v Washington Wizards game tonight, so I decided to stay in town. Sure enough a little before 6PM, my phone rang and I hauled my lifeless body to the Verizon Center for the game.
Tip off was at 7PM and I arrived at the arena 10 minutes before the hour. Mandy had a ticket for me, but I wasn't sure where it'd be. **** I'm a bit of a ticket snob. I expect a good seat when I go to a game, and I'm willing to make sure I have one. Since I had a few minutes, I decided to scalp a ticket. The first guy I talked to refused $50 for a ticket in section 120. That's fine. The next guy showed me a ticket in section 119, row E. Face value was $125. I offered him $50, and next thing you knew, we had a deal.
I texted Mandy that I was good and into the building I went. Turns out that she and her friends were in section 118. Perfect. As I watched the 1st half, it finally hit me late in the 1st quarter that John Wall wasn't playing. Um, yeah. Like I said, it's been a long day. Guess I'll have to go to another game. **** Oh, I know ~ I'll go and catch the new look New York Knicks (i.e. with Amare Stoudemire) when they come to town.

Another thing I noticed was that Gilbert Arenas was playing tonight. I can't honestly remember the last time I've seen Gilbert in uniform and playing. He had a great game tonight. He tallied 31 points. On one possession Gilbert took a shot and the man on my left told his daughter, "4 years ago, he would have made that shot." Wow. What can I say though? The man spoke the truth.

We went to watch the 4th quarter and the game was definitely tighter. Incidentally, the line was Washington +7. I told my friend, I'd take the points if I was him. Without John Wall, and after the victory over Miami, I figured that the Magic would win, but that the game would be competitive. Needless to say, I was correct.
After the game, we took our visitor passes and headed to the tunnel to greet the Orlando Magic. Patrick Ewing walked by, but I've met him numerous times before so I wasn't going to bother him. He signed a basketball for someone and whoever that person is better realize just how lucky he/she is to have a Ewing autograph. **** When I was in college I tried a number of times to get him to sign my Knicks pennant and was always unsuccessful. However, since I've run into him and talked to him a number of times, I don't feel pressed to make contact again.
I saw J.J. Redick and Chris Duhon and contemplated taking a picture with them, but the more I thought about it ~ I'm "Duke'd" out after all the games I've seen. I'm actually going to see the Duke v Butler match-up on Saturday (i.e. next week). My brother is a Duke alumnus... I'm good.
Alex Ovechkin was at the game sitting courtside. Coincidentally, Vince Carter was also sitting courtside on the Magic's bench, since he's injured (i.e. knee).
The rest of the Orlando Magic eventually trickled out of the locker room, and last but not least, Dwight Howard came out to the tunnel. Finally, I took a good picture with him and that was all she wrote.
Great night out. Magic defeated the Wizards with a score of 100-99. Dwight Howard's put back was the difference, since the Wizards couldn't convert on their final possession. Dwight Howard finished with 32 points and 11 rebounds.
Not a bad night at all...

Can we all agree now that the Cavs don't need to be afraid of the Celtics?
Yesterday, I received a message from a friend who asked me what I thought about him betting the Celtics +2.5 v the Cavs. Paul Pierce was going to be out, and the Celtics were at home. The person, who sent me the email, mentioned that he'd just watched a game where the Cavs didn't play much defense and were hoisting 3 points shot, etc. To be honest, I hadn't caught the last couple of Cavs games (i.e. or maybe I had, and just don't remember them). Anyway, since I hadn't "seen" the last couple of games, I told my friend he'd probably be OK. However, I added the caveat, that I didn't like "betting againt Lebron". ***I've been catching plenty of games (i.e. college and pro) lately on TV, and they're all beginning to swim in my head. I'm almost to the point where I want to start traveling again, so I can experience something "new" and hopefully more memorable.
So here's what happened. Yesterday, I went to a Women in Sports Media Panel event; and therefore, missed the first half of the game. However, I managed to get out and catch most of the 2nd half of the Cavs v Celtics match-up. I actually figured that the Cavs would start out hot and have a huge lead v the Celtics, and that the Celtics would rally back on their homecourt for the win. Why? Because the Cavs haven't won on the Celtics' homecourt in their last 9 tries... I checked out the play-by-play summary, and it turns out that my assumption was correct, INITIALLY... Why "initially"? Well, by the time I planted myself in front of the TV and looked at the score in the 3rd Q, it was a relatively close game (i.e. working off memory it was 78-77, I think ~ but exact numbers aren't important here).
At around the 9 minute mark in the 4th Quarter it looked as though, my initial guess would be incorrect. The Cavs kicked into gear and started SCORING. The Celtics might as well have sat on the bench and watched as the Cavs surged, since the scoring was so one-sided. In that final quarter, Mo Williams made four 3-pointers, and the Cavs BLEW OUT the Celtics 35-14. Yes, you read those numbers correctly. Wow! Can you imagine the feeling on the Celtics bench and the feeling in the hearts of all the Celtics' fans out there? I can only imagine what Bill Simmon's tweeted during the game... ***Just went to my Twitter and it looks like Bill was surprisingly quiet. Also, "Thank you," to everyone who contacted me regarding my Twitter account getting hacked last night. I'm not promoting the use of Viagra, but if it works for you and you're happy ~ "YOU'RE WELCOME".
Final score of the game was 108-88, and the Cavs finally won a home game in Boston. Boston, I actually still need to hit that venue... ***Remember, I'm trying to hit a home game for every professional basketball, baseball, and football team. I'm up to 59 venues, right now. The last time I saw the Celtics in town (i.e. verses the Wizards earlier this month), Paul Pierce went to the floor injured and Kevin Garnett was playing in one of his first games back, since he was coming off of an injury. Everyone in my sports and social circles were telling me that as a Cavs fan, I needed to be scared of the Celtics. Well, I've said it many times before and I'll reiterate it now. The Celtics are "old", not healthy, and not to be feared. Last night's performance is further evidence that the Cavs should only be concerned with Orlando in the East.
Speaking of Orlando... The main reason Cleveland picked up Shaq this season, was to add a large presence and be able to give up 6 quality fouls when the Cavs go against Dwight Howard in the playoffs. Shaq left the game last night with an injury to his right thumb. Did you see the video? Why did "Big Baby" Davis challenge Shaq to a "Thumb War"?!?!? Aren't they both LSU alumni, so can't there be some level of respect? Lol. Who knew "Mean/Bad Baby" Davis played a little dirty? Anyway... With an injury to Shaq, and Zydrunas not re-signed yet ~ the Cavs are vulnerable in the middle and must rely on Varejao's defensive play. It's no secret that I'm not a fan of Varejao's basketball skills... I must give credit where credit is due, and Varejao did play well last night. However, I continue to keep my finger's crossed EVERY TIME he steps on the court, and pray that he doesn't become a liability and ruin the Cavs' (i.e. and MY) dreams of an NBA Championship.
Go Cavs!!!

NBA All-Star Game ~ 2010 NBA All-Star Weekend, Dallas
2 Sundays ago, I went to my very first Super Bowl. Last Sunday (i.e. 2 days ago) I went to my very first NBA All-Star game. Yes, I said it ~ "VERY FIRST". Some people find that surprising. Sure, I've been to Jam Sessions and All-Star Saturday night for the 3 Point and Slam Dunk contests... But, I've never made it to the actual All-Star game ~ until this year.
This year's Super Bowl was historic. The Saints won it all in their 44th year as a franchise in Super Bowl XLIV (i.e. the 44th Super Bowl for those of you that are Roman numerically challenged). This year's NBA All-Star game was also historic. It was slated to draw a world record in attendance for a basketball game, since it was being played in the New Dallas Cowboys Stadium.
I was thrilled to be going to the game, even though I'd been to the new stadium earlier this year for the Eagles v Cowboys playoff game. You knew that already, right?!!? No?!?! Well you would have, had you been following this blog since Day 1. Just saying... :-P
For those of you, who are curious ~ and you know that you all are. Here is some video I found on youtube that shows how the floor of the new Cowboys Stadium was transformed to accommodate the 2010 NBA All-Star game. It's AWESOME.
The NBA transportation took us to the arena easily. There was a long line for people to get into the arena. Fortunately for me, I didn't have to wait in that line... Inside the stadium, I couldn't wait to see the setup for the basketball game. A quick trip across the concourse and this was the view that I saw.

After sizing up the arena and looking at the seating differences for basketball, I descended into the tunnels and was able to take in the scene prior to the player introductions. Kobe Bryant wasn't playing the game, but he was in the tunnels.
Kobe Bryant talking to Dwight Howard
After that scene got tiresome, I walked through the tunnels and went towards the floor of the stadium and took in the scene at "field level". I couldn't believe I was so close to the action and the energy of the stadium was palpable. People were excited and you could feel it! More Kobe interviews were conducted, while Reggie Miller and Marv Albert were doing their pregame show segments.
Usher performed 2 or 3 songs prior to the player introductions. Does anyone know if Usher still has an ownership stake in Cleveland? Just curious. Next question: Is Usher still relevant? I don't think he is, but that's my 2 cents...

Before the game with the East and the West on the floor
Opening tip
It's the NBA All-Star game. I've watched many of these through the years and the "formula" is the same. The players have fun for the first 3.75 quarters and begin to play for the win towards the end of the game. During the 1st half of the game, I scanned the crowd and enjoyed the action on the court. At half time, I was curious to see how the crowd would be managed as the players traveled what I'd like to refer to as "Lombard Street" at the new Cowboys Stadium... For those of you that don't know what that means, I beg you to travel to San Francisco and the curves of "Lombard Street" for yourself.
The path the players had to walk reminded me of the game Centipede...
Shakira and Alicia Keys performed at half-time. My only complaint was about Shakira's outfit, since it was a cross between Beyonce's "Single Ladies" leotard and Lady Gaga's outfits with the "shoulder embellishments"... All of them look great ~ but come on.... Can we please get some originality ladies?!?!

Also, at half-time, the USA Basketball team was presented to the crowd. The 2010 FIBA World Championships are being held in Turkey this September. 27 marquee names on the roster include: LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Dwyane Wade, etc. For all of you Duke fans, I'm sure you'll be happy to know that the USA head coach is Mike Krzyzewski.
Some of the members of Team USA
With under 40 seconds left in the game, the score was tied at 137. This made some people nervous, because not many people wanted this game to go into overtime. Eventually the East won the game 141-139 and Dwyane Wade was named the MVP of the game.
As the stadium cleared, I took some more pics around the stadium and watched the taping of Inside the NBA.
Kevin McHale, Chris Webber, Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, and Charles Barkley
After the Inside the NBA was done taping, here are some gems that I was able to snap.
On the actual game court
Chris Bosh and Amare Stoudemire leaving the stadium
Dwyane Wade leaving the locker room
Dwight Howard leaving the stadium
By the time we all left the arena, it was LATE. I ended up chatting it up with PR and media people from all over the country. Ever sat in front of someone who's written about you in a newspaper and he not know who you were? I have and it's a very strange feeling.
NBA ~ Where amazing happens!
