I decided to skip Rihanna's Diamonds World Tour on April 24 in Baltimore. It was a rescheduled date, since she had laryngitis earlier. Originally I looked forward to the concert, but as the date approached I had a change of heart.
I'd seen/heard Rihanna perform before. I heard her when she opened for Kanye West on his Glow in the Dark Tour in 2008. She also performed (i.e. a year or so ago) during an NBA All-Star weekend, and I thought it was great.
However, last week I just couldn't motivate myself to go and see her again. Maybe it is/was all the entertainment news about her and Chris Brown. With their make ups and break ups on display for everyone with internet access and entertainment television, all that on and off and on and off again, turned me off. When given the opportunity to receive a full refund from Ticketmaster, I pounced.
I'm not sure what it is, but I'm just not a Rihanna fan anymore. I enjoyed her early material (e.g. "If it's Lovin' That You Want", "Umbrella") but in hindsight I had buyer's remorse and wasn't willing to pay approximately $140 to see and hear her newer material. Yes, there are are couple of her newer songs I enjoy, but there aren't ten. There may not even be 5.
Further, with all the Chris Brown nonsense, Rihanna just seems so "emotionally heavy" and drama filled that I didn't think I would've enjoyed the show. Different strokes for different folks, but personally I think all of that mess sends a bad, mixed message to girls.
I'm sure if you're true Rihanna fan, you enjoyed the concert. You may have even had the time of your life. I was happy I was able to stay home, and I can't wait to see the full refund appear on my credit card statement. I can watch the light-hearted, happy Rihanna anytime I want on youtube.

Made in America Festival, Day 1 ~ MMG, D'Angelo, Passion Pit, and Jay-Z
I was in the US for Labor Day and that meant that I could attend Jay-Z's Made in America Festival in Philadelphia. The MIA Festival was a 2-day festival (i.e. Saturday and Sunday) and with Labor Day off, you know I was planning on making the drive up/over to Philly to check out the festival. I bought a 2-day VIP pass, which gave me a free T-shirt, a souvenir ticket, a bottle of water, a special VIP tent, and a special VIP viewing area. For someone like me, this was THE PERFECT way to go. The VIP viewing area had its own bathrooms, but the tent had better bathroom facilities and it offered a buffet for $20. There were also bars for your convenience. **** The Platinum VIP tent had open bar, but for someone like me who attends these festivals by myself at times, I don't usually drink.
There were two stages and a tent where DJs spun (i.e. I think). I stayed in the VIP viewing area for 99% of the day, and only listened to the other stage and watched the screen, when I was interested. Luckily for me, I could see the screen from my makeshift perch. The way the barricades were set up, there was a line of seats in the VIP area, so about 20 of us were able to sit, without having to do so on the ground.
Day 1 of the festival was a long one, but it was worth it to see Jay-Z perform, especially with special guest star Kanye West. I'm a huge Kanye West fan, and having Kanye come out on stage was a dream come true for this fan.

My day started out with Rick Ross and MMG. For those of you that don't know, MMG, stands for Maybach Music Group.
After MMG, I saw D'Angelo again. **** I'd seen D'Angelo the week prior when he was in concert with Mary J. Blige. D'Angelo's performance was shorter than the performance the week prior, but it was about the same with regard to tone and style. The guy to my left said it perfectly, when he said, D'Angelo sounded like a mix of Prince and James Brown.
After D'Angelo, Passion Pit was on the main stage, and they definitely warmed the crowd up for Jay-Z. Inflatable beach balls bounced around the general admission section (i.e. directly in front of the stage) and the energy of the crowd went up.
Each act, earlier in the day, was on for about an hour, but Jay-Z had 90 minutes. If you want to see Jay-Z rock a show, by himself, for more than 90 minutes I suggest that you see him in concert. This was a festival and with guests like Common and Kanye, etc. Jay-Z definitely shared his time on stage.
All in all, I had a great time on day 1 and couldn't wait for Pearl Jam on Day 2.
Oh, and for those of you that are curious, OF COURSE Kanye and Jay-Z ended the show "in Paris".

NBA All-Star Game ~ Lenny Kravitz, Rihanna, Kanye, and Kobe as MVP
The West won the 2011 NBA All-Star game, even though LeBron James did his best to make up the difference and put the East in the lead. Kobe Bryant played his heart out in front of the Lakers crowd to win MVP.

Enough about music, back to the game...
Great game, great music, and great time! Bring on Orlando...

The Grammy Museum ~ John Lennon and Hip-Hop Special Exhibits
On the walk back to the hotel from the LA Convention Center, I decided I wanted to check out The Grammy Museum (i.e. located on the campus of LA Live). I've walked by The Grammy Museum a bunch of times when I was in LA, but usually had some place I needed to be. Since I'd just wrapped up Jam Session and was waiting to hear back about my ticket to NBA All-Star Saturday night, I figured I'd run into the museum to see what it had to offer. Plus, the Grammys were just on TV, so I while it's still relevant here you go!
A ticket to The Grammy Museum is $12.95 for adults. Currently, the museum is featuring two special exhibits. One is "John Lennon, Songwriter" and the other is "Hip-Hop: A Cultural Odyssey". I asked the lady who sold me the ticket how long it'd take me to see everything and she estimated 60-90 minutes.
The Grammy Museum is 4 levels and the tour starts on the 4th level. You descend from floor to floor until you complete your visit. There is no photography or video recording in the museum. I didn't try to break the rules, but I admit I'd like to have a picture of a Grammy for this post.
Obviously since it's The Grammy Museum, sound is very important. Beats by Dre headphones are everywhere, including the gift shop.
I'll admit I LOVED the Grammy Awards two years ago. The most recent Grammy Awards, I found to be a little boring but I enjoyed the commentary on Twitter as my friends and I watched the show. I was thrilled to watch previous award show performances on a big screen at the museum (e.g. TLC, Whitney Houston, Kanye West and Jamie Foxx, etc.). It's been said that, "Music is the soundtrack for our lives," and I believe it. Music can take you back in time...
I enjoyed looking at the hand-written lyrics, seeing the Grammy dresses/costumes, and listening to the beats I tried to spin/mix while playing DJ. **** Jennifer Lopez's infamous green dress, that she wore when she was with Diddy is at the museum. Incidentally,Taylor Swift is not only talented, but she is also tiny ~ I know because her dress is also on display.
The Grammy Museum also has public programs. On February 25 at 8PM, the museum presents "Icons of the Music Industry: Russell Simmons". Russell Simmons will be at the museum to discuss his influence and entrepreneurial approach to business and philanthropy. After his interview, according to the flyer, Russell Simmons will take questions from the audience.
If you haven't stopped into The Grammy Museum yet, check it out.

NBA All-Star Nike Party ~ Q-Tip, Kanye West, Kobe Bryant, etc.
![]() |
Tickets and parking pass |
Every year there are one or two parties that are special during the NBA All-Star weekend. I was fortunate enough to be given two tickets to the Nike Party. **** Thank you to Q-Tip and the Insideplaya!!! The Nike party was supposed to be held at Drai’s which from what I hear is an outdoor spot at the W Hollywood. When I arrived to pick-up the tickets, I was happy to see that the party was being set up in the lobby area (i.e. Living Room) of the hotel. The weather had been unpredictable with rain and wind, so an outdoor setting wouldn’t work.
I invited my friend Teri to join me at the party. There are very few occasions when I can take care of friends who take care of me for basketball, and this was one occasion where I could return the favor. **** If I offer you a ticket and you don’t accept it, because you think you can get a better offer ~ recognize that you’re going to the bottom of my list or will possibly unlisted in the future. I don’t deal well with people who think they can get a better offer, when I’m already offering you the BEST.
I knew Q-Tip would be spinning at the Nike party and that Kobe Bryant would be there. I had no idea that Kanye West would be performing. Talk about a surprise!
As we headed to the party, we passed the Music Box where Kenny “The Jet” Smith was holding his annual NBA All-Star party. There was a large group of people standing outside the venue trying to gain entry. As we approached the W Hollywood, Teri and I traded our tickets for wristbands and went to enter the party. There were 2 tents set-up outside. The first tent was more the metal detectors, and Teri and I skipped that line. The second tent was to get in, and there was a large crowd trying to get in. Teri went straight to the front of that line and I followed her. We passed, Suzy , from the TV show Basketball Wives. She too was trying to get in and skip the line. While waiting a few minutes, I saw Ne-Yo and what looked like 15 of his friends go in.

With Spike Lee |
Spike Lee was in the house as well.
After I got my drink, I went over to see Q-Tip to thank him for giving me the tickets. I patiently waited for him to “break”, but the man was WORKING/WIRKING! He was killing it. Finally, I had my chance to say “Thank you” and formally introduce myself. I’ll never forget his big, warm smile. Of course he went back to work, and I went back to the party,
If you’ve never been to a Nike party, you need to go. Make no mistake, Nike knows how to throw a party. There were passed burgers, sushi, etc. in addition to the open bar. Food is hard to come by when you’re always on the go, so it was great to be able to eat a little bit at the party.

I’m not sure what time it was, but my friend Teri who was also planned to hit the ESPN party was sent a text that the ESPN party had ended. Too bad for those folks. The Nike party was just kicking into another gear. For the ESPN folks that could get in to the Nike party, it looks like decided to come on over.

Kobe Bryant |
Eventually Kobe Bryant (i.e. and his wife et al) showed up and took the table next to where I was near Q-Tip. Kobe’s Nike film played and Dirk Nowitzki flashed the “big L” (i.e. loser sign towards Kobe, but it was all in good fun). After that, Kanye West took the stage and performed. Kanye’s set was great. However, I must admit that I’m a huge Kanye West fan and I love watching him perform.

Kanye West performing |
I saw the party as it was being set up and as the party ended I realized I would also be closing it down. I saw Kevin Durant again this year, and told him “Thunder Up”. He smiled. The last person I saw was Rajon Rondo, so I just reminded him that I saw him in the Bahamas over the summer.
**** Forgive the pictures. I read that no cameras would be allowed, so I left it in my hotel room. Had I known that I wouldn’t have to go through the metal detector, I would’ve brought it in. This is the best that my iPhone could do.
What a FANTASTIC party!

The Wirk takes time out (i.e. vacation aka the 7th inning stretch)
Vacation <-- One of my favorite words in the English language.
Vacation <-- What Mr. Wright talked me into, and I'm much more relaxed, tanner, and happier as a result of it.
Call it my 7th inning stretch. I started this blog in January to chronicle my sports, music, and travel adventures and give my 2 cents on any topic that interested me. After 6 months of INTENSE travel for work and Wirk, I needed a break ~ even if it was a short time-out.
I was in Panama City Beach, Florida on family vacation over the weekend. It wasn't my family, but hey ~ those are just details... I'd never been to PCB before, and I hadn't seen my friend in almost 2 years. So, when Mr. Wright asked me to join him on family vacation, I said YES.
I met Mr. Wright years ago when I lived in Atlanta. He and I built a friendship through the years (i.e. met in 2002). As soon as I saw him, I had a crush. He's handsome, it was inevitable. I shared an apartment with a coworker and whether I'd be out with her or out with friends, it just seemed like every weekend, he was always there.
We wouldn't really go out much, but we always had fun. My first trip to Turner Field was on Easter, when he took me to a Braves game. Mr. Wright loves baseball but hates professional basketball. Yes, even Mr. Wright is not perfect, LOL. We've seen Prince at Philips Arena. Remember Music Midtown in Atlanta? We were there for its final year in 2005. He wanted to see Common, and I wanted to see Kanye (i.e. sure enough they came out on stage together).
We went to Las Vegas to bet the Super Bowl. He had the New England Patriots, and I won on the New York Giants +12.5. He might be Mr. Wright, but I was Ms. Right, that Sunday! Vegas again for his 30th birthday. Why?!? Because, that's what you do for the people that matter in your life. You spend time and you take care of your friends and even though miles separate, you find ways to keep in touch.
My friend takes care of himself (i.e. eats right and exercises) so he looks great. His personality equals his appearance. His friends refer to him as a "Manther". When I first heard it I couldn't help but laugh. If you don't know what it is, look it up. I don't know whether I agree or not, but I will tell you that he's not old.
I can't spend a couple of days with all the people I want to in my life, but I am definitely happy I was able to a time out and focus on the waves of the ocean, hang in a pool, have dinner, and walk the beach while looking for ghost crabs with my friend, Mr. Wright.
I didn't see any tar balls or sign of oil along the beach,, but we did see a smaller shark that had two bites taken out of it. I assume it was by a bigger shark. Ever have your friend scare the hell out of you on a beach by acting like a shark or crab was going to get you? No? I have. I jumped out of fear and he cracked up laughing. Awesome. But anyway...
-----------------------
Don't know what a ghost crab is? Neither did I, but they're a bunch of them in the shallow water on PCB at night. Kids are out there with nets and buckets trying to catch them. If you've never seen one, check out this video. **** No, I did NOT shoot this video. I just found it on youtube.

Thanks for making me take a much needed time out, Mr. Wright. See you next time!
