In case you're like me and not right on top of the USA Men's Basketball schedule, I'd like to let you know that the USA Men's (i.e. and Women's) Basketball teams are coming to the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. Both teams will be playing Brazil's Olympic squads.
Do you know who Oscar Schmidt is? If you are a true international basketball fan, you do. Regardless, educate yourself here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_Schmidt.
I digress... Let's get back to Team USA...
If you want a pair of front row tickets (i.e. according to Ticketmaster's website) that are in section 112 (i.e. which traditionally look at the visiting team's bench for NBA games) there are a pair for $827.65 EACH. That's right - for you and your wife/buddy/customer/client/child/boss, etc. you'll spend close to $1,700. Don't worry, Moneybags, a portion of you ticket price will go to USO charities. So if you're fortunate enough to have the ticket money, a huge fan of Team USA, and can't make it to London for the festivities - get yourself to the "Phone booth" on Monday at 5:30PM for the doubleheader.
Here's a link so you can purchase your tickets: http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/1500488CE14C7042?artistid=873991&majorcatid=10004&minorcatid=7
If you're feeling charitable, I'm only interested in a single ticket and it's ONLY $520.90. If you want to donate to my ticket account, feel free to Paypal me at sjwirk@gmail.com.
For all of you that have $59, you can pick up seats to the game if you use the discount code: wizards and following the link: https://oss.ticketmaster.com/html/go.htmI?l=EN&t=wizards&o=505&g=2197
**** I guess I've been catching too many clips of Team USA in Las Vegas, that I presumed that they'd head straight to London when they were finished training in Las Vegas. As it turns out their stint, out West, wraps up on July 12.
In addition, I was talking to my friend, Teri, earlier and The Nike World Basketball Festival 2012 will take place at the DC Armory July 14-15. This was also news to me. You can expect to find me at the DC Armory this weekend to get over my basketball drought, since the NBA Finals, and to relive some 1992 Dream Team Memories. From what I understand there will be some select appearances by members of the Dream Team at certain events.
So, for all of you "hoop heads" in the DC/VA/MD area, it looks like you have something to do! Go out and support Team USA Men's and Women's Basketball.
Nominated for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Men's Team were: Carmelo Anthony (New York Knicks); Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers); Tyson Chandler (New York Knicks); Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder); Blake Griffin (Los Angeles Clippers); James Harden (Oklahoma City Thunder); Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia 76ers); Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves); Chris Paul (Los Angeles Clippers); Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder); and Deron Williams (Brooklyn Nets). Oh and there's another guy... Hmmm. What's his name? You know - that guy who left Cleveland to win a Championship with the Miami Heat. Yes, LeBron James.
The men are coached by Duke University's, Coach K.
Admitedly, I'm not as familiar with the Women's team, but here are the names I recognize from the USA National Team: Sue Bird (Seattle Storm), Swin Cash (Chicago Sky), Tina Charles (Connecticut Sun), Asjha Jones (Connecticut Sun), Maya Moore (Minnesota Lynx), Candace Parker (Los Angeles Sparks), and Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury). **** No offense intended to the other women on the squad who's names I didn't include. I think I only recognize these names from their NCAA Women's Tournament game performances.
The women are coached by UConn's own, Geno Auriemma.
Enjoy.

NBA International players to cross the pond if lockout ~ I say, "No"
I've been reading a couple of headlines related to international players in the NBA (e.g. Mehmet Okur and Andrei Kirilenko) and the plans they're "considering" if there's an lockout next season. Having survived a NBA lockout in 1998 with an international player who also entertained offers from other teams in Europe (i.e. if I remember correctly, I remember a team in Spain was interested), I'm willing to call the player's bluffs. If these guys start looking for their passports, my bet is that they're going for pleasure and NOT business.
I remember the NBA lockout "vacation" that was had. To say that everyone was unhappy would be a lie. Players who were committed to conditioning and rehab still worked out. They just might've been found working out at MLB facilities, local community centers, and health clubs, etc. From what I could see, for those players not living paycheck to paycheck and who were smart with their money, life was just fine. It was good time off. Recently I asked a writer what he did during the last NBA lockout, and he said he was more or less on vacation also. After such a busy offseason with everyone chasing LeBron to get the scoop on his "decision", maybe it wouldn't hurt to have some NBA rest... Just a thought, but I digress...
I'm not about to read up on Okur and Kirilenko's contracts, but I do feel as though they're solid in the NBA and have viable careers. I have no idea what their making in terms of $$$, but I do feel like the risk of injury overseas is too great. We're not just talking about international competition like the Olympics and FIBA World Championships. We'd be talking about a "season" or partial season.
If you think I'm buying the story that these guys (i.e. and not specifically Okur and Kirilenko) or anyone with a viable NBA career are going to pack up and head overseas, you're fooling yourself. You'd have better luck selling me season tickets to one of the bottom dwelling NBA squads that are always mentioned in the same breath as the word "contraction".
**** Actually now that I think about it, both stories about an international player heading across the pond are about players with the Utah Jazz... Random, but I think pure coincidence, since the Jazz are having success at 26-13. FYI, I took the pictures for this post back in April 2009.

Is Okur going to hop a plane to Europe, if there's a lockout?
Is AK-47 taking his ammo across the pond, if there's a lockout?

USA v England ~ Ended in a tie 1-1
I'll admit I don't know much about the FIFA World Cup, but I am an American so let's go USA. I really should watch more soccer/futbol... These guys are handsome and very athletic...
I know USA is the underdog is this match, but I'm more than happy to root for my country! All this World Cup activity and international competition is getting me excited for the Olympics in 2012 in London.
When I was in London last November, I was staying at the Marriott in Kensington. I came "home" after dinner and ran into Burnley in my hotel lobby bar. The entire team was there and they were scheduled to play Chelsea the following day. I was headed out of town, otherwise I definitely would've LOVED to check out that match. Incidentally, Burnley defeated Chelsea the next day. Moreover, that just goes to prove that sometimes underdogs win. Next time I'm in England, I will make sure I see a match.
--------
In the 1st half, England scored early off of a goal by Steven Gerrard. However, USA got back into the action after Clint Dempsey scored after a mistake from Calamity (i.e. no, try "Catastrophe") Robert Green.
The match ended with both squads tied at 1.
On another unrelated note, these guys are HOT!!!! I need to watch more soccer/futbol. Wow!!! Who do you think is the best looking man in soccer/futbol?

Quick thoughts for the day: Hockey, Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Sports Nation
Thoughts for the day:
Olympics
THE WIRK
Olympics
- Hockey will have my attention tonight. Canada v Russia at 7:30... I'm not leaving my house until this game is over.
- I saw Ladainian Tomlinson crying (tears running down his face) on TV today ~ his reaction to being let go by the Chargers. In a world where "Big girls don't cry", I was taken aback to see LT visibly upset
- I don't want to type Ladai..'s name out AGAIN, but let's face it ~ the nickname, "LT" should only be used for Lawrence Taylor .
- On Monday I noticed that LT had been released, and I made the mistake of mentioning it to my friend who used to live in San Diego. "Can he not play well anymore?" was what I said, and she vehemently came to his defense. Wow. If only his many fans had a say in the matter....
- So the NFL wants HGH testing, but the NFL Players Association is against it. Is anyone really surprised?
- The combine would be more interesting if they'd add events such as arm wrestling, tug of war, etc. then maybe I'd be curious and watch... Remember the obstacle courses on Nickelodeon's "Double Dare" or the game show "Wipe Out"? Wouldn't you buy tickets to see the guys perform those types of events ~ and see the speed, strength, and agility that they do/don't have? I would. Man... That'd be great!!!
- I tried to look this up because I distinctly remember watching some show when I was younger where Kevin Willis (i.e. the former NBA basketball player, that I'll always associate with the Atlanta Hawks) had won. I think the competition was sponsored by Jeep, and was held on the beach and had events like weight-lifting etc. It was great entertainmet and it was fun to see different athletes compete in different events.
- Wizards are playing the Grizzlies tonight. I thought about going ~ to see OJ Mayo play, but then decided I didn't care enough to spend the money.
- If anything, if forced to hit a Wiz game this week ~ I choose Friday's match-up v the Knicks.
- The Trailblazers' Marcus Camby sprained his ankle last night... That means that there's yet ANOTHER injury that needs to be circled on that image of a body during the games... You know what I'm talking about, right? Every game I see that has the Trailblazers playing has one of the announcers circling every team injury on that picture. The poor image looks like the character from the game "Operation"... Every limb seems to have something circled... Terrible. Does Portland even have enough people left to play tonight against the Raptors? Ok ~ I just checked and it looks like some of the guys are better now, but seriously...
- Someone in the front office needs to think about changing the uniforms to hospital gowns...
- According to Michael Lee, the Wizards Insider, the Wizards (i.e. and I) are waiting for Zydrunas to sign the papers for his buyout. He's expected to pay back between $1 million and $1.5 million of his $11.5 million contract. He received a trade kicker worth about $600,000 for being part of the trade that brought him to DC. According to Lee, the "official word" should come out tomorrow but it looks like Zydrunas can re-sign with the Cavs, on March 18.
- If that's what happens, he'll make his home debut (i.e. at the Q) on Sunday, March 21st against the Pistons.
- Can we please stop talking about Mark McGwire? I don't care. I will not buy the book. Enough.
- As bad as I think this show is, today I caught part of again. Just when I thought it couldn't get worse, today there were guest hosts... Wow. Who made the decision to put this show on TV? Does anyone have/know that person's contact information? Sports Nation is a discount version of PTI (i.e. Pardon the Interruption), the news segment on Saturday Night Live, and a game show. It's very strange...
