Giants lost to the Braves, but I won with my Panda hat

Friday night I ventured out to AT&T Park for my second visit.  I drove to the Hayward Park Caltrain station and decided to head to the ballpark using public transportation (i.e. rather than fight traffic and pay more to park).  Yes, it's true.  I'm not a fan of public transportation, but when I travel I like to try to figure out the best way to do these adventures and most of the time, public transportation makes more sense.  ****  It cost $3 to park at the Caltrain station and the fare was $4.50 each way.  I can almost guarantee that it'd cost more than $12 to park by the park, so already I was a winner.

Did you know that you could bring your own alcohol and consume it on the train on the way to the baseball game?  I didn't.  Oh, and if you're underage don't try to get away with it.  The train I was on had police on it to make sure people were of age.  Further, you're not allowed to consume alcohol or have an open container on the return voyage from the ballpark.

It was a short walk to the ballpark from the Caltrain station, and the scalpers I expected were plentiful.  For a rookie buyer this can be intimidating, but if you stick to your guns and know what you want, the scalpers respect it.  I wanted a premium field club ticket and the scalpers didn't have it.  I ended up going to the box office and luckily they had a premium field club ticket for me.

As I entered the park, I went to the concession stand and bought food.  I then went through the tunnel to my seat.  My seat was 3 rows behind home plate (i.e. if you don't count the 3 rows in the Lexus area).  FANTASTIC.

In between innings, I scooped the $20 Panda hat, that I'd been coveting since my previous visit.  I couldn't have been happier, except that the World Champion San Francisco Giants lost to the Atlanta Braves.  ****  I really don't have a preference between either team, but when I visit a venue I usually root for the "home" team.

By the way, did you know that Lou Seal has his own 2010 World Series bling also?  Check out the picture!

Giants' pitcher, Madison Bumgarner, was relieved of his pitching duties in the 3rd.  Tommy Hanson ended up leading the Braves to victory.  The final score was 4-1.

Jason Heyward cross the plate to add a Braves' run
The lone Giants' run was scored by my favorite Giant, Pablo Sandoval.  So even though, the Giants lost, my evening wasn't a bad experience.  In fact, I can't imagine ever a bad time at the most beautiful ballpark I've ever seen!

Weekend: Braves v Giants, Thunder v Nuggets, and Denver Aquarium ~ Posts to come

It's been a busy couple of days and now it's Sunday and there are more games on.  As I watch the Celtics work the Knicks on TV, I'm editing my pictures from the Atlanta Braves v San Francisco Giants game.  I'm also going through my trip to the Denver Aquarium yesterday and Game 3 of the Oklahoma City Thunder v Denver Nuggets series.  Yes, I finally made it to the Pepsi Center.

I plan to get these posts out tonight or by tomorrow night, so please check back.  In the mean time, I'm tweeting at TheWirk.

Enjoy!

I watch Champions... Who are you calling Jinxsee?!?!

I've been noticing something.  If I watch a team live during the season, chances are they win a championship.  Cases in point:  UConn, the San Francisco Giants, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Green Bay Packers.

Interesting.  Who wants to give me a ticket to watch their favorite team play?  I'm lucky!

That's right...  Who are you calling, Jinxsee?!?!  :-P

In Dallas for the World Series, but never made it into Rangers Ballpark ~ Rangers rally today

I went to Dallas for the World Series, but I never made it to the game.

****  Incidentally, last year I was working in London and on vacation in Rome for Halloween weekend.  I visited the Roman Colosseum and many other sites during that weekend, but being the sportsfan that I am, I have to say that the Colosseum was definitely my favorite destination on the trip.

OK.  Enough about that.  Back to Dallas...  I was planning on going to Game 3 on Saturday (i.e. and looked forward to seeing my friend from school, who was also in town with his kids).  Game 3 was the first home game for the Texas Rangers and they were 0-2 after losing both away games to the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.  Prior to arriving in Dallas, I did what I always do.  I called a couple of my contacts and began hawking ticketing sites.  I looked on Stubhub.com on Friday and I was ready to pull the trigger, but I hesitated.  In addition to going to Dallas for the World Series, I was there because I wanted to get to know someone better and wanted to spend time with that person.  Therefore, when it came to the game I hesitated.

I never hesitate.  Correction:  I've hesitated one time before, and I have never forgiven myself.   Til this day, I still remember forgoing a concert for a birthday party, and til this day I want to kick myself.  I can't lie, those feeling are creeping into my brain again, and I'm beginning to turn sour.

If it were me, JUST ME, I would've had a ticket in hand on my way to the ballpark.  I had the money I won in Vegas earmarked as the funds for the the ticket to the game.  If it were just me, I would've been prepared.

It wasn't JUST ME, this time and I was accommodating someone else in my plans.  When we walked around the park it was clear that there weren't many people selling.  The fans of the Texas Rangers were obviously excited since the team was in the World Series for the first time EVER.  Yet another reason to go to the game since it would be so compelling for the fans.

Before going to the game, while sporting my presents, a new Rangers T-shirt and a new Rangers hat, my new person of interest and I had a quick bite a Charlie Palmer at the Joule.  The lobster corn dogs and beef skewers were my favorite.  I must disclose that the sauce for the beef skewers was a bit salty though.

After our meal, we headed towards Rangers Ballpark to scope out the scene.  Around the stadium there were various scalpers, but their inventory was scant, undesirable, or even fraudulent.  There were a few guys that purchased fake tickets that wouldn't scan or were printed out numerous times so that the bar codes were no longer any good.  There were only about 3 pairs of upper level seats that were up for grabs and the going price was $500/ticket.  Standing room only tickets were also up for grabs, but there weren't many (i.e. less than 10 were being offered by the scalpers outside).  SRO tickets were going for $400-$500 also.  ****  There was a Goldentickets.com bus parked near the stadium, but I never checked their inventory.  I've used them before though, and I've been satisfied with their service.

Saturday was a beautiful night for a baseball game.  We saw the fireworks light up the sky when the Rangers hit a home run.  There were plenty of people tailgating for the game and enjoying the game from the nearby parking lots.  They'd set up the power cords and had the game on TVs for other fans to watch and enjoy.  Guys on rickshaws were transporting people from the lots to Rangers Ballpark and charging a minimum of $10.  Have you ever ridden one?  They can be fun and the guys get a good work out as they pedal you to the park.

After giving up on getting a ticket into the game, we headed off to dinner at the Dallas Chop House.  If you haven't been to the restaurant yet (i.e. it's about 8 months old), I recommend that you check it out.  The food was fantastic.  For appetizers, we enjoyed a lump crab cake and an avocado, ahi tuna, and cucumber appetizer  and a dry aged sirloin for my main course.  I think it was a sirloin, but I could be wrong.  Whatever the cut of meat was, it was very tender and juicy...  In addition to the food, the restaurant's design is appealing.  The outdoor bar and seating area at the Dallas Chop House had an outdoor fireplace that was very sexy and offered warmth when temperatures started to fall at night.

My Saturday night in Dallas didn't go as expected, but great food and company helped ease the disappointment.  This blog started with the NFL Playoffs and covered my adventures at the Super Bowl, NBA All-Star Game, The Masters, NBA Finals, and most recently covered my run during the the MLB Playoffs...  Wouldn't you know, Game 3 was the ONLY game the Rangers won in the World Series, and I missed it...  Ain't that a kick in the head?!!?!?

Looks like I exhausted all my luck during the New York Yankees v Texas Rangers ALCS series, when I happened to have the best seat in the house next to someone special... C'est la vie :-P

I received an email today about the Texas Rangers rally that will be held today Wednesday, November 3 at 6:00 p.m. in Lot J on the west side of Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.  The rally will feature President Nolan Ryan, Manager Ron Washington, and a number of the players from the 2010 American League Champions.  The Rangers Rally is free and open for all fans. Free parking is available in Rangers MetroPCS Lot A, Academy Sports + Outdoors Lot B, Lots C, M, and N and Cowboys Stadium Lot 4 beginning at 2:00 p.m. Fans should note that Nolan Ryan Expressway between Road to Six Flags and Randol Mill Road will be closed today beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Long weekend in Las Vegas with my dad and friends

I spent the long weekend in Las Vegas with my dad and some friends to celebrate another friend's birthday.  It was a fun time and I especially enjoyed the time away with my dad who I haven't seen since last Christmas.  The craps tables were lucky for me and the sports book was good to me also!

I bet on the New York Rangers to defeat the New York Yankees in Game 6 for the ALCS.  That's right, I bet againt the Yankees.  What can I say?  I just might want to go back to Dallas after all.

As for my other sports action, I had the Patriots +2.5 over the San Diego Chargers.  I took the money line on the Pittsburgh Steelers over the Miami Dolphins.  All winners.  It would've been even prettier had I hit my 2 team parlay (i.e. San Francisco Giants and Oklahoma), but the Sooners just couldn't pull through for me.  I lost a heartbreaker when the Vikings lost to the Packers, but what a game that turned out to be!  C'est la vie.

I don't normally play the fire bet, but I did see a man make 5 original points.  That was definitely interesting.  Wish I'd found his roll earlier.  ****  I checked on my dad at the craps table during half-time of the Steelers game, so we could have lunch.
On the way back, John McCain was on my flight from Phoenix.  This is actually the 3rd time I've run into him, so the novelty has worn off.  However, this was the first time I decided to snap a picture.

Regardless, the highlight of my return trip was the TCBY chocolate frozen yogurt with extra strawberry topping!  That stuff is so good!

Giants defeat the Phillies ~ NLCS Game 1, Cody Ross was the hero

In every game there must be a winner and a loser.  I was more than excited to score a front row ticket to the pitching duel between San Francisco Giants, Tim Lincecum, and Philadelphia Phillies, Roy Halladay.  That's right...  NLCS, Game 1...  A Saturday night...  You read it correctly, FRONT ROW!!!  My seat was right behind the Giants dugout, and I couldn't wait to watch The Freak battle Doc Halladay.

From my seat, I was in a great spot to cheer on the San Francisco Giants, but I was disguised in my Philadelphia Phillies hat.  Don't get me wrong, I really don't have a preference in the National League between the Phillies and the Giants.  However, I made it out to AT&T Park this year and really enjoyed that ballpark.  I'm not really a Phillies fan, but I like Charlie Manuel.  I remember him from his days in Cleveland when he was managing the Indians.  I met him briefly years ago and he seems like a good-hearted man with a comedic touch.  I recently saw a clip of his post-game press conference when he was reacting to Halladay's no-hitter.  He made reference to it being a "good managing"...  It made me laugh.

In a game that I anticipated to have more defense than offense, I was quite surprised by the drama in the game.  Cody Ross is a name I didn't even know, but the man had 2 home runs!  That's right, 2 home runs and both were the the left.  Have you seen this guy?  I'm definitely paying attention now.  He was the star of the game.

This game was another good one, and I'm definitely glad that I went to it.  The ALCS game 1 had a 8th inning, Yankee rally that made things interesting.  I eagerly anticipated the NLCS game 1 match-up since it promised pitching drama.  I have to admit though, that I'm a Pablo Sandoval fan, and was bummed that the Panda didn't play.  I've never met the man, but I find him to be likable.  I had a great seat and was looking forward to seeing him do something exciting.

If you want a game re-cap or a boxs core, check ESPN.  I really don't have anything more to say about the game.  Oh, here's a funny one for you.  During the game, a lady came down to my section and started calling for Freddy Sanchez.  She wanted the media and Phillies facility staff to let him know she loved him.  Awesome.  She tried to get to the dugout, but didn't get too close.  Sanchez should thank us...

Giants v Phillies for the NLCS ~ Lincecum v Halladay, Game 1

Well, the NLCS match-up is set, and I can't wait to see the San Francisco Giants play the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park!  Game 1 has Tim Lincecum going up against Roy Halladay, and it should be an amazing battle...

I guess it's time for me to hunt down some tickets and try to rearrange my schedule, since I really don't want to miss this match-up...  If you can help a girl out with access to tickets, please contact me via email at thewirk@gmail.com

If the Giants are more your "flavor", then I recommend you buy the Pablo (i.e. Sandoval) Panda hat like my friend, Mandy.

Panda hats, not your style?!?!  Well, for those of you that cheer for the Phillies, how about a Halladay jersey?!?!

****  The Giants victory today, was the last note of Bobby Cox's 29-year song as Manager of the Braves.  Thank you, Bobby, for all you've done for the Atlanta Braves and Braves' fans everywhere.  Enjoy your retirement!

Mary Poppins & SF Giants defeat the Washington Nationals ~ July 10, 2010

I never turn my phone off.  Ok - that's a lie.  I turn my phone on airplane mode on planes.  Regardless, that's not the point.  The point is I'm rarely if ever away from my phone because you never know who's going to call and what can happen.

I was running around on Saturday and on my way to grab my friend, Amy, so we could go and see Mary Poppins at the Kennedy Center.  I wanted to go to the matinee show so I'd have my night open to do whatever else I wanted to do.  ****  For those of you that are curious about the show ~ go see it.  It's not completely true to the movie, but it's a great adaptation.  My only real complaint is that the show didn't do the whole "Step in Time" song.

View from our seats in the Opera House at the Kennedy Center

Now back to my baseball story...

While I was driving, I received a text from my friend, Pat.  He said he might end up with some really great tickets to Saturday night's game and wanted to know if I wanted to go.  ****  Lucky for me, his buddy was at the beach and couldn't go!  I texted back "Yes!!!!!!"  Next thing you knew I had a ticket to the game in the President's Club.  What a guy!!!

Awesome night for a baseball game, and I got to see the San Francisco Giants defeat the Washington Nationals.  The Nats had the lead, but blew it.  Regardless, it was a GORGEOUS night out for a baseball game and it was definitely fun to check out the President's Club.

For those of you that don't know ~ the President's Club is the area right behind home plate and the seats are padded.  The seats come with all you can eat food and a buffet before/during the game.  From inside you can see the Nats' batting cages and the Media Room where the post-game press conferences are conducted.

Baseball Mickey Mouse statues to Southern California ~ 2010 MLB All-Star Game

I got bored watching game 2 of the Phoenix Suns v Los Angeles Lakers series and started looking for panda hats.  Yes, my mind works in myterious ways...  Panda hats.  Why?  Because, I saw them when I was in San Francisco at the Giants game and I thought they were cute, so I wanted to see if I could snag one on-line.  As I clicked various links to get to the SF Giants on-line store, I noticed that there was a 2010 All-Star Game Mickey Mouse figurine being sold to commemorate the 2010 MLB All-Star game (i.e. held at Angels Stadium this year).

I did some more digging and came across the following article, written on April 19, 2010:  http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?content_id=9417216&fext=.jsp&ymd=20100419&vkey=allstar2010

**** For those of you that will never click the link, let me summarize.  According to the article, "Major League Baseball Properties and Disney Consumer Products unveiled on Monday 36 designs of MLB-themed Mickey Mouse collectible statuettes and related apparel and merchandise in celebration of the 2010 MLB All-Star Week festivities taking place July 9-13 in Anaheim as part of a new collaboration between the organizations. "

The 36 Mickey Mouse statues will be decorated using the same logos and designs as the MLB statuettes (i.e. in the baseball team logos). The MLB Mickey Mouse statues are 7 1/2 feet and weigh 989 pounds.   The Mickeys will begin to appear at landmarks throughout Southern California as the All-Star Game nears (i.e. the game is on July 13), but the exact locations have yet to be released.  Trusr me, I've looked...  I still can't find the information, but I sure as hell intend to find these statues!

If you ask me, both MLB and Disney hit homeruns!  Mickey Mouse and baseball ~ I might be dreaming!  Don't you dare pinch me...

San Francisco Giants beat the Houston Astros 8-2 at AT&T Park, my 68th venue

Friday night I was in San Francisco, CA and took a trip to AT&T Park (i.e. my 68th venue) to watch the Houston Astros take on the San Francisco Giants.  Giants won and it was an excellent night out for some baseball!

On the way to the ballpark The Rick, worked his magic and scalped us two tickets in the field club section of the stadium. Scalping was easy. There is a large market of tickets availabe. The Rick went against my better judgement, when he decided to pay a dollar value that wasn't a multiple of $20. I told hm that he should've low-balled the scalper and dropped the price $10, but he didn't care. Oh well. Our seats were awesome.

After taking pictures of the Willie Mays' statue, we went into the separate entrance for field club ticket holders, through the concession area, past the medium rom, and down the hallway towards the Giants clubhouse. **** If you know me, you know I love having access to this kind of stuff... I eat stuff like this up!

View from the seats
Once we checked out our seats, we did a lap around the ballpark to see all the interesting features that make the ballpark unique.  The cable car, the marina, the San Francisco-themed concessions (e.g. clam chowder in a Boudin sourdough bowl) etc. all contribute to the charm of the stadium.  Any true baseball fan needs to check out this venue.

The San Francisco Giants beat the Houston Astros 8-2.  I must be lucky for home teams, because on Friday night, the Giants ended their three-game losing streak, and Houston ended their four-game winning streak!  It was an exciting game to watch at a wonderful stadium that offers baseball fans such views as McCovey Cove (i.e. Willie McCovey was a monster left-handed hitter that played in the 1960s and 1970s with the Giants) a beautiful marina, a cable car, and the Bay Bridge.

Enjoy the following pictures from around the ballpark.

The Cubs defeat the Braves @ Turner Field ~ Chipper Jones leaves the game injured

I love Atlanta.  I used to live here, and tonight I kicked off baseball season with a visit to Turner Field.  ****I like to make my travels transparent so I woke up at 4AM this morning to catch a 5:45AM flight. Generally I hop the earliest flights to ensure that I can arrive at a destination and work a full day (i.e. conference calls, emails, system testing). Today, after I was done working, I was able to take advantage of the fact that I was in my other home away from home.

Lou Piniella's Cubs were in town to play the Bobby Cox's Braves.

After a rainy day, spent inside tethered to my laptop around 7PM a friend and I venrtured over to Turner Field.  We missed the opening pitch because of the Masters' coverage, and yes - usually I'm diligent about arriving at a stadium early and being in my seat in time for the opening pitch - BUT admitteldy, I was also curious to see how Tiger would perform today.  ****For those of you that are living in under a rock he shot a 68.

Arriving at Turner Field, I honestly felt like I'd never been there before.  Nothing looked familiar.  It was very strange.  In general, I'm "anti-change".  I value consistency.  However, Atlanta is like home and I have learned to "trust" the city.

My friend scalped 2 tickets outside, while I took pictures of the Hank Aaron statue.  ****There were other statues on display, but the Hank Aaron statue was the only one that I felt compelled to photograph.

With tickets in-hand, we proceeded to our seats on the 3rd base line.

Great seats and great weather make for a fun, relaxing night out. I sat down in my seat, with the Cubs up 1-0 and Chipper Jones at the plate, in the 3rd inning. It was perfect timing to see the Braves' star at bat and  subesequently "walk" to first base.  Unfortunately, Chipper was was forced out at third later that inning and left the game with a side injury.  Omar Infante replaced him in the line-up.  According to ESPN.com, Chipper may not play in the upcoming series of games in San Francisco against the Giants (i.e. the Braves left immediately after the game to head out of town).

Chipper's last at bat of the night ~ he'd end up walking

The Cubs scored another run in the 4th inning to go up 2-0, and that would be the last run of the game. The Braves would make the game interesting (i.e. they did have more hits than the Cubs), and subsequently the Cubs utilized pitching roster.

The Cubs changing pitchers AGAIN

Ultimately the fire power I expected to see from Jason Heyward et al, failed to translate into runs tonight.

The rookie went 0-4 tonight

Melky Cabrera at bat ~ the Braves' last chance of the game

The next home game for the Atlanta Braves is on April 16 @ 7:30PM.  The Braves will be hosting the Colorado Rockies.
@ Turner Field

That's all for now.
