Caps beat the Panthers at home ~ Let's go Caps!!!

I went to my first Caps game (i.e. of the season) Saturday.  It was the first time I've seen the team with Oates at the helm.  Who knew Ray Liotta knew anything about hockey?!!?  Anyway...  My husband is British, and I've been busy introducing and assimilating him into American sports.  ****  Last year, I was successful in converting him into a baseball fan.  He also checked out a New York Knicks game at The Garden.

OK, let's get back to the original topic.  The Caps game.  The Caps haven't gotten off to the best start this season.  Perhaps it's a new coach, the end of a lockout, or something else -- but this slow start is new to Caps fans like me, since we're used to the Caps dominating.  I check the standings now and have to scroll down.  Scroll down?!!?!  It's all so devastating.  Yes, I'm being dramatic and yes, I'm kidding.  It's my blog.  I can do whatever  I want...

Well, it looks as if my husband is good luck for the Caps because they actually DOMINATED the Florida Panthers.  Great win for the Caps and hopefully they'll get back on track soon!

This girl doesn't like scrolling DOWN...

I spied Alex Ovechkin when I ran out to meet a friend on Sunday

I went out for a little bit on Sunday to meet a friend, and guess who I saw having lunch.  Alex Ovechkin from the Washington Capitals.  I've seen numerous Caps players when I'm out and about, but I've never been that close to Ovie.  He walked by my friends and I.  I said, "What's up, Ovie."  He smiled.  He frequents the same place I go to, because of the close proximity to the Kettler Capitals Iceplex.  Plus, no one really bothers him when he comes in.

Incidentally, he's a hockey player, but I expected him to be bigger.  He's not much taller than me, and I'm 5'7"-5'8".

If you want a picture of the two of us, too bad.  I don't bother people when they're eating, and when he left, he didn't want to take a picture.

All good though ~ I've seen him play a number of times and at a bunch of basketball games, so I'm sure I'll run into him again, eventually...

I think this is a sign that I need to start keeping up with hockey again...

Go Caps!

Eric Fehr's 2 goals propel the Capitals over Penguins ~ Winter Classic

The Winter Classic, from Pittsburgh is in the books and the Washington Capitals have emerged victorious.  The Caps defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-1.  The hero of the game was Eric Fehr.  Fehrzy had 2 goals and

70,000 fans sat in the rain and "cold" at Heinz Field.  Penguins' Evgeni Malkin scored first.  ****  Here's one of my better pictures of Malkin from May 2009.

Mike Knuble scored for the Caps to tie the game at 1.  Fehrzy handled the rest.

If you're not a Caps fan, you may not have known Eric Fehr's name.  Well, hopefully now ~ you won't forget it.  Living in the DC area, I run into a lot of the Washington Capitals.  The ones I've met have been friendly and appreciate their fans.  ****  Here's a pic I dug up from 2007, with Eric Fehr.  Nice guy.

Capitals and Penguins meet again on February 6, 2011 at the Verizon Center.

By the way, I had no idea Caps coach, Bruce Boudreau, went to my high school...  At least he looked like he did with his "varsity" jacket...  Just kidding!

C---A--P-S!!!  CAPS! CAPS! CAPS!

Fight, Overtime, Hat Trick ~ Capitals defeat the Canadiens in Game 2

On Thursday night, I watched an exciting Montreal Canadiens v Washington Capitals game, that ended with the Caps losing in overtime.  I watched the game on TV and regretted not being in attendance at the Verizon Center.

Determined to not make the same mistake twice, I hustled my way over to the phone booth and sat pretty in section 104 for Game 2 of the series.  If you're a Caps fan and you missed last night's game, you should be ashamed of yourself.  Plain and simple.  You probably even hate yourself right now...

Last night's game in one word, can be summarized with, "UNBELIEVABLE".  Thanks to Metro's delays, I was about 5 mins late to the game.  Yes, I took public transportation.  It's ridiculously convenient to the arena, and the prudent thing to do.  Just my luck due to service delays, by the time my ticket was scanned, Montreal had scored.  The scoreboard read 1-0, and the bad were guys up.  Next thing you knew it was 2-0.  Great.  Jose Theodore was yanked out of the game, and Varlamov was placed in goal.  New goalie, new game...  Finally, still in the 1st period, we got on the board thanks to Eric Fehr, who scored his first goal in the Playoffs.

Time elapsed, the Canadiens caught fire and next thing you knew the Habs were up 4-1.

With a 3-goal deficit, things weren't looking good for Caps fans, but unlike in basketball games where it appears there's going to be a blowout ~ Caps fans stay.  The entire arena was "Rockin the Red" and no one was going anywhere.

During the game, I was texting scoring updates to my friend in Canada, who couldn't watch the game, since he was at a business dinner.  Each time I'd text him that his Habs had scored, I'd receive the same response, "OMG".  Even he couldn't believe it!

If you can't beat them, why not fight them, right?!?!  I mean, this is hockey...  So, in the 3rd period, Caps fans were treated to a fight when Tom Poti and Scott Gomez decided to mix it up.  Told you this game had everything for a hockey fan..

Fight ~ the Habs, Scott Gomez and the Caps, Tom Poti

Sure enough, the Caps were able to find their offense and John Carlson scored his first goal of the Playoffs.  Carlson's goal tied the game at 5, and we were heading into OT.

So many stories can be told about Saturday night at the Verizon Center, but the hero of the game was Nicklas Backstrom who notched a hat trick and led the Caps to victory in OT!

Hat Trick!!!

On the way home from the game, I ran into someone I knew on the train.  Actually, the minute I got on the Metro I heard someone yelling my name.  Imagine my surprise to see that it was a guy wearing a mask.  "Mask guy" was creeping people out on the train and drunk from the DC United soccer game.  He couldn't tell me if DC United had won, but needless to say no one bothered me on the train, while he was next to me.  Yes, I have strange friends.

Go Caps!  Game 3 is on Monday in Montreal, at 7PM.

Tiger, Masters, Duke, Caps, Cavs, and the Caesars Tennis Classic ~ What a week!

Golf:

As I sit and try to figure out whether I want to go to the Masters this week (practice round v tournament), I realize I don't have time on my side.  I need to make a decision.  Tiger Woods' interview is at 2, and I'm waiting patiently.  I doubt we'll hear anything of interest, but I have to cover my bases.

Basketball and Hockey (i.e. maybe):

Tonight is the National Championship game and I'm probably the only person (i.e. that's alright because I'm confident) that has a Duke victory as a forgone conclusion.  As a result, I'm entertaining the idea of going to the Caps game tonight, since it's been a while since I've been out to support them.  To address the rumors of Coach K going to coach the Nets, all I have to say is "Nope".  That's my opinion, and we'll see where my 2 cents stand up against $12-$15 million that's supposedly going to be offered.  I for one adore Coach K at Duke, and hope that he's not lured to the NBA by a few bucks.

On another note related to basketball, I have to say something about the Cavs v Celtics game I watched yesterday afternoon.  The Celtics held on to win, but they almost gave the game away (i.e. they squandered a 22 point lead).  If I was Doc Rivers I'd be very, very scared.  I wish LeBron would've went for the tie.  He went 0-9 in 3 point shooting.  I was more than ready for overtime.  However, my vote doesn't count.  Regardless, I'm still praying for a Cavs Championship this year.  I believe, and I cannot wait for the NBA Playoffs schedule to be announced.

Lastly, it's no secret that I couldn't wait for Zydrunas to return to the Cavs.  As such, check out the Fresh Brewed Tees - Cavz: Better with Z T-shirt.  It's a great shirt and at only $20, just buy it!  $1 from each sale goes to support the Cleveland City Mission.

Fresh Brewed Tees ~ So good, I bought two!

Tennis:

I'm still intrigued by the Caesars Tennis Classic being held this Saturday, in Atlantic City.  Venus Williams is hosting the event.  Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, James Blake, Andy Roddick, Pete Sampras, and Marat Safin are slated to play.  For a person who used to follow the ATP Tour when names like Chang, Sampras, Agassi, Becker, Edberg, etc. dominated ~ this event is a fantastic idea!  Ticketmaster is offering a Buy One, Get One Free promotion (i.e. use promo code: BOGO).

I'm including some pictures of the pictures I've taken from my days of tournaments past.  The quality isn't that great, because I haven't scanned these pictures yet.  However, you get the point.

Ivan Lendl

Agassi

A young Pete Sampras

My favorite, Stefan Edberg

Boris "Boom Boom" Becker

That's all for now.

Caps, Caps, Caps! ~ What a great couple of games and nights out!

The Caps are back at the Verizon Center and are perfect since the Olympic break.  Thursday night, I was lucky enough to take in the Caps game v the Tampa Bay Lightning in one of the Lexus suites thanks to my friend with another technology company.  There was an event, and I met a great group of guys.  Caps beat the Lightning and it was a great warm-up for a fun night out with new friends.

That was Thursday...

----------------

Yesterday, I caught the OT period of the (10) WVU and (9) Villanova game.  Great game and WVU pulled off the upset.

Last night, I had another suite ticket thanks to a friend and took in the Caps v Rangers game.  Who doesn't like a free ticket?  It was the Caps 46th consecutive sell-out game and almost everyone at the Verizon Center was "Rocking the Red".  If you haven't been to a Caps game yet, what are you waiting for?

I'd been in this suite before, thanks to my friend, Amy so I thought I knew what to expect.  Wow,  Was I wrong...

The suite is located near the Dunkin Donuts on the concourse, and my sweet tooth was craving some sugar.  I left the suite to pick up a couple of donuts and a large iced coffee.  Sure enough, within 2 minutes, I was joined by about 7 police officers who told me that, "Cops don't eat donuts," as they patiently waited in line.  They were funny.  I told my friend about it, and she said I should've snapped a picture for the blog.  Shoot ~ she was right?!!?  Oh well.  Opportunity missed, but something tells me I'll have the chance to do it again.

Amy and I started out watching the game in a great suite.  In the 1st period, Eric Fehr put the Caps up 1-0.  Fantastic.  I'm a fan of Fehrzy so that's great.  Belanger scored the 2nd goal ~ and that's great news for him, since he's a new addition to the team.  Both goals by an "Eric"...

It was a physical game

I never really pay attention to the entertainment between the periods, but this time I watched the Mites play.  The Mites are the little kids that take the ice and play "lil hockey".  They're adorable.  One thing that I couldn't help but notice was that the lil goalie had leg pads that were almost as big as him!  So cute.  Poor lil guy got worked for a hat trick though, by some other kid.  I know the kid's name, but am not going to mention it here because he's a kid.

Just adorable!!!

Right before the 3rd period, I could heard Amy's name being called in the suite.  Next thing you know I was told to grab my purse because we were moving down to right behind the goal on the glass!!!  What?!?!  That's right, our sweet, suite seats were being UPGRADED to RIGHT BEHIND THE GOAL, ON THE GLASS!!!

Check out the view from the new seats.

Jose Theodore was perfect

The Caps won the game, 2-0.  I was thrilled to have such a great fan experience, I actually bought an Ovechkin jersey, while walking along the concourse.  This is the first jersey I've ever purchased.  Do you have a Caps jersey yet?  I guess I've officially jumped on the Caps' bandwagon now ~ but I have to admit, that the Caps are definitely the best show in town!!!  Thank you, Caps!  What a great night out!!!

Thank you, Amy!

After the hockey game, we went out to see some friends, and I noticed that Duke was killing UNC at home.  The final score was Duke 82, UNC 50.  WOW.  Here's an exchange I had last night, that still makes me laugh today.  What a tough year, for Roy Williams, the Tarheels, Tarheel fans and the ACC...  Ouch.

Me: Wow. Duke is killing UNC?
Friend: Don't watch that. UNC is going to the NIT.
Me: UNC should head to the YMCA instead...

Oh - one more thing... While I was out, I ran into a familiar face.  "You look like a girl I've known since I was 6 years old," I said to her.  As it turns out, she was/is a girl I've known since 2nd grade.  Moral of the story ~ If you're out there, I will find you!  I pay attention to people and I rarely forget a face.  It doesn't matter if I haven't seen you in a year or years, if I consider you a friend or family, I'll find you in a crowd...

Next week, is going to be a great week.  The Dallas Stars take on the Caps on Monday, and it looks like I'm heading to check out that game out also...  There's basketball and another concert on the schedule for me...  Conference tourneys begin...  Gotta keep it moving...

Caps beat the Red Wings, 3-2 ~ Happy Tuesday!

Yesterday (Tuesday) I was working and thinking about what I wanted to do this week.  My typical day has me going espn.com, nba.com, ticketmaster, orbitz, and various ticket broker websites to see if there's anything worth doing or going to see.  I also have a group of friends on gchat, and I pinged my friend and hockey buddy, Rod (aka the Donkey), to see if there was a hockey game.  Why is he nicknamed the Donkey, you ask?  I don't know.  He would call me "Donkey" every now and again when we first met and I'd always reply the same way ~ "If anyone's a donkey, it's you."  Therefore, he's always been Donkey or Donk, to me...

The Donkey typed that that the Red Wings were in town and that the Caps were on a winning streak.  Hmm, it sounded like a big game and it'd been a month or so since I'd been to a Caps game and I decided I wanted to go.  The Donk shares season tickets with a buddy of his, and he didn't have seats to tonight's game.  I asked him what he'd be willing to pay and he set his price at $60/ticket.  I was already on the Caps ticket exchange, and I didn't see anything available in that price range.  The Donk replied that I needed to check Craig's list.

There are many things I'd rather do than check Craig's list.  Don't believe me?  Believe this....  I'd rather (1) get my teeth cleaned, (2) try to move my 200 pound Sony TV fossil from one room to another, (3) go to the post office, (4) wait in line at the bank, and (5) pick someone up at the airport ~ ALL in one day than deal with someone on Craig's list.  Craig's list bothers me because I have no idea whether the person I'm dealing with is selling a legitimate product, whether they'll keep to the deal we agree upon, and follow through on delivery (i.e. which usually means I have to meet a stranger who already knows I have cash on me).  To me, it sounds like a recipe for DISASTER.

It was already close to 4PM, but I could tell that I semi-motivated the Donkey to look for tickets.  He ended up making an offer to someone on Craig's list.  The Donk is brave enough to trust and risk death for his Caps.  I'm not.  I'm from Ohio and we didn't have hockey where I grew up.  I recently became interested when I moved to DC and noticed 2 or 3 years ago that the Caps were fun to watch.  Since then, I've been to a bunch of games and I've enjoyed them every time.

2 years ago a day after my birthday shenanigans, I was grabbing some grub with my friend Trey.  We'd just hit the batting cages and decided to stop at a bar/restaurant called The Front Page.  Incidentally, this establishment is across the street from the Kettler Ice Complex where the Caps practice.  This was the time of year of the training/rookie camp and there were a few hockey guys there that night.  Have you ever seen a hockey guy without their gear on?  It's not a bad sight...  That year I started to notice that the Caps go to the Page for lunch and sometimes I'd find them there after games hanging out in their "civilian clothes".  Needless to say, I started to pay attention to hockey ever since.  But I digress...

Back to the story...

4PM hit and I had a conference call for work.  I was on the call and as time slipped away I noticed that it was almost 5PM and I had never heard back from the Donkey.  I assumed he left work since his green light was no longer on for his gchat window.  Oh well.  I assumed Caps hockey was a "no go" for tonight.  Sure enough, I looked at my personal phone and it was being blown up by my friend, Amy.  Interesting.  Amy never calls me.  She's like most of my friends.  She's a texter.  I picked up and told her that I was on a conference call, but that I'll call her back when it was over.  She told me that that wouldn't work, because she needed to know right away if I wanted to go to the hockey game tonight.  Say what!?!?!  It turns out, Amy's co-worker, Shannon, couldn't go and that Amy had 2 free tickets to a suite for the game.

Um, YES, I wanted to go to the game. I told Amy that we're on, but that I needed to track down the Donkey and make sure he wasn't going to end up screwed with 2 tickets.  I called him and got voicemail.  I texted him and it took a minute.  He replied that he's going to the gym.  I texted him to make sure we weren't doing hockey together, and then it looked like he changed his mind and wanted to go to the game...  Ruh roh...  Another text, goes out and I let him know I have a free ticket.  "Just go" was the last text he sent me.  WOOHOO!!!  I was all clear to go see a hockey game with Amy.

I headed over to Amy's, since she was driving us to the game.  I told her, "Thank you for inviting me".  She told me that it's an easy choice because there aren't that many people that are home, that she can get a hold of, who aren't married/have kids, and would want to go.  She's right!  That's ME.  I'm fluid.

We headed to the arena and joined the people in the suite.  This was Amy's first hockey game either this year or ever.  I'm not really sure what she said.  She was impressed that the Verizon Center was so packed on a Tuesday night.  Yeah - that's Caps hockey.  The team really draws!!!!  The Red Wings score first. Booooo!  No one throws octopi on the ice ~ we're in DC, people!!!

Great.  Now I have to look up why Detroit Red Wings fans do that...  One sec.  Be patient...

OK - according to About.com here's why, "The first octopus landed on the ice during the Red Wings' 1952 Stanley Cup run, courtesy of brothers Pete and Jerry Cusimano, who owned a fish market. If you know your cephalopods, you will know that an octopus has eight tentacles. In those days it took eight playoff wins to claim the Cup, hence the supposed symbolism of the gesture."  Mystery solved, and now I want to go to Joe Louis Arena.  Wait, do the Red Wings still play there?!?!  I know that building is OLD and has been around forever...  Ugh...  Now I need to look that up also ~ but don't worry, I'll do it on my own time...

During the game Amy pointed out someone in an astronaut costume.  The guy in the astronuat costume is sitting next to a lady dressed up like "I Dream of Genie/Jeanie (sp?)".  She's holding a "I dream of Stanley" sign.  Clever.  Anyway, Amy informed me that supposedly this guy is nicknamed the Capstronaut.  Novel idea, considering I just saw Chewbaca in a Vikings jerey at Sunday's football game.  Needless to say, I think it's great when people do fun things like that!  Evidently the Capstronaut gets invited to sit in the owner's box sometimes.  Damnit..  That's brilliant!!

Before you knew it, we had an exciting hockey game on our hands.  Jose Theodore took more shots on goal in the 1st period, than the next guy who decides to fight Manny Pacquiao...  Sticks were breaking and there was a mini-scuffle on our side of the ice.  Red Wings fans were mouthing off and getting tossed out of the arena.  It was definitely a great hockey night.  Eventually the Caps won the game 3-2 and kept the streak alive. Game over.  What was left to do?!!?  Duh, I headed to the Page and celebrated the victory with other Caps fans!  :-P

C-A-P-S!  CAPS!!!  CAPS!!! CAPS!!!
