Professional athletes and their money ~ ESPN 30 for 30's "Broke"

Have you seen the ESPN 30 for 30 film "Broke"?  I saw it last week and it started to jog my memory.  Back when I was in the NBA as a WAG, I saw and heard plenty of things that reminded me of the documentary...  Here are a my thoughts.

Ever been to a house where there are checks for $30 THOUSAND dollars sitting in an ashtray?  Yes, checks for $30 THOUSAND dollars just sitting --- getting stale.  I have.

Ever talked to someone who never looked at their phone bill, yet continued to place long distance and international calls.  Home phone bills for several hundred dollars weren't uncommon, until I switched to the "dime a minute".

Ever taught someone in their mid 20s, who makes millions of dollars, how to write a check?  I have.

Ever heard someone pitch the idea of investing in a movie theatre?  I have and might even have the prospectus or business plan sitting in a box somewhere.

Ever heard someone tell you that he's going to go look at Hummers, only to get a phone call that he bought a new Hummer only an hour later?

Ever have your mailbox flooded with tax paperwork in the months leading to the tax deadline?  Professional athletes pay taxes in all the states they play in.  To me, that's no secret, but for the general population this may be news.

I've been there and seen/heard all of it, and it's the norm.  That's just what happens in the league.

I've seen lesser paid teammates' WAGS buy up labels and carry bags with THOUSANDS of dollars in merchandise daily/weekly.  One of the WAGS used to spend so much money, that it was unreal to the rest of us women in the family lounge.  It's no secret, on a team, as to who is making what.  Athletes' salaries are more or less public, so when a rookie's WAG is spending money like it's going out of style, you know there's trouble ahead.  No one said a thing, because frankly it wasn't our business.  Incidentally, this particular athlete was a good guy personality-wise, but he ran into other financial and legal problems, after he left the league.  Tragically, he didn't last long in the league and actually died last year (i.e. age 34).

Some athletes save their per diem money in a jar.  If I remember correctly, in the late 90s-early 200s, per diem was $92.  That money adds up if you save it.  Then again, all money adds up if you save it...  There was one athlete I knew who saved his per diem money and lived a no frills lifestyle.  He didn't last very long in the league either.  He played a little more than 40 games in the NBA before heading overseas.  Last I checked, he became a citizen of the Republic of Macedonia so he could play as a European.  Do you know where Macedonia is?  Neither do I...

That's the thing.  Many of the guys come from college and they and their parents think that their professional careers will be long.  It's a dream.  I don't care how good you were in college.  Ok, maybe I care a little bit.  However, if you're vying for a spot on the team that's being held by a highly paid veteran, you're probably not going to get any meaningful playing time, regardless what sport you're playing.  Don't believe me?  Who's Alex Rodriguez's back up?  Who's Aaron Rodgers' back up?  That's right.  You don't know.  If you don't get meaningful playing time, you're not going to get re-signed, and if you don't get re-signed, you're OUT.

Guaranteed money isn't a given in all the professional sports.  While you can "bank on" checks coming in if you play in the NBA or MLB, money isn't guaranteed in the NFL.  In a city with all 3 sports, it was interesting to see how people spent their money.  When I was a WAG, I'm pretty sure that my player was the one of the top 3 highest paid players in the city, if not the highest at one point.  We lived normal lives, and when I say "normal" it was as normal as possible.

We were in a mid-market city and we lived reasonably, aside from the Hummer, there were really no lavish purchases and concerns (i.e. from a longevity standpoint) that the money would run out.  The focus wasn't on money, and in part, I think it was because of the values that were instilled from our parents.  The focus was on the game, his career, and winning.  Materiality wasn't an issue, because he had nothing to prove off the court.  His esteem came from his numbers, the team's performance, and let's face it -- numbers speak for themselves.

Money affords you access and more choice.  These are luxuries that you can indulge in easily as an athlete, since you're usually recognizable and people expect you to act, look, and spend a certain way.  I watched shows like "MTV Cribs" and used to laugh.  I often pitched a show called "Repo" (i.e. as in repossessed) because it doesn't take a "math major" to realize that people are spending themselves into very deep holes.

Agents talk.  They talk about their other clients, and you hear how players are going to have to "play until they die" to pay for all of their cars, kids, and houses.  That particular statement was made about a basketball player, who was a college phenom, but after 12 years in the NBA, can't find a team who wants him.  As he waits to see if he'll get picked up this season, he's turning down offers overseas.

It's no secret that a career in professional sports can be shortened with an injury.  Career lengths depend on so many factors: the sport, position, minutes, fate, etc. Remember Orlando Brown?  I can't say a thing about his financial situation, but who would've guessed that his career would be so affected by being hit in the eye by a penalty marker? Tragically, he died last year also (i.e. age 40).

Don't even start me on lockouts.  Depending on the athlete's spending, lockouts hurt.  Just like some people in the "regular" workforce, some athletes live paycheck to paycheck.

Gambling.  Yes, I've gambled with many current and former athletes in Las Vegas and the Bahamas.  I've seen guys spread hundreds of dollars on the craps table and I've seen thousands all being risked with a roll of the dice.  Easy come, easy go...

Women.  Like with money, they're easy come, easy go.  Some athletes do find love.  Others are picked apart by vultures looking to win the lottery.  You know the expression, "No money, no honey".  Trust me.  It's true for some of these guys.  If they weren't perceived as having money to blow, they'd be a lone wolves.  It's difficult for athletes to trust, since they are targeted by so many different people.  It's no wonder they hold onto their high school/college girlfriends for so long (i.e. even though they cheat left and right).  I know a woman who dated one guy on a team for years, only to marry a different, higher paid teammate later on.  Awesome, right?

House.  When I was a WAG, we were house hunting and learned about a 2nd round pick in the 1999 NBA draft.  His career was unexciting to say the least.  The ONLY reason I know his name is because he was building a house down the street from where I used to live.  Granted the house I lived in as a WAG was right on the water (i.e. Lake Erie) and he chose to build there too.  Another Google search showed me that he made 50 cents on the dollar (i.e. compared to my player) and his house was appraised at double the amount of where I used to live. Hmmm.  Granted we're talking approximately 10 million v 5 million, etc. and I'm not one to tell people how to spend their money, but it looks interesting to say the least...  I hope he's been smart with his money, now that he's out of the league.

Oh, there are so many stories I could tell about my years as a WAG and as I'm still in the "circle of trust" new stories are shared all the time, but I think I've said enough.

All the best to everyone in professional sports.  My advice to all professional athletes:
  • Review your bills.  Don't use your agent as your financial advisor.  That's not what his 3% is for.  Let your agent negotiate your contract (i.e. if you even need him for that).  Let's face it, unless you're a mid-range salary guy, you can probably determine your own value within the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) salary guidelines).
  • To quote Michael Jackson, "Don't go around breaking young girls' hearts."
  • Learn to save.  Your career isn't going to last forever.  You need to plan for your retirement.
Professional athletes worked so hard to realize their dreams of playing professional sports, that they should want to preserve their legacies.  They need to assert themselves, be educated, and tell people "NO" when they're asked for money.  There's nothing wrong with telling people "NO".  If you're a professional athlete you need to realize that it's your money.  You earned it, and it's not going to last forever.

Dirk WIRK stickers, signs, and shirts ~ http://www.NewDirkShirt.com

The past few days have been busy because I've been slammed at work, but I know I need to post before things I want to put out there become less relevant.

As I was leaving the Cubs v Phillies game on Thursday, my friend (i.e. Mandy) sent me a picture of a Dirk WIRK sticker.  It was on a trashcan.  Immediately I wanted to know what was going on....

On Sunday, as I was headed to Game 6 of the NBA Finals in Miami and I received a picture of some Mavs fans with signs...  They had huge Dirk WIRK signs!  As soon as I saw the picture (i.e. sent from Mandy), I told her I was on my way to the arena and had to figure out what was going on.  At half-time I raced past an usher and my friend who writes for Yahoo! Basketball to head down to their section to chat with them (i.e. and pose with the sign).

****  Incidentally my writer friend texted me just after the opening tip to ask, "U have anything to do with dirk signs that say wirk on em".  Too funny.  The answer is, "No".

Here's a picture of the nice Mavericks fans who explained the signs to me and gave me the name "Jordan Rogers" as a person to try to locate to get more information about the Dirk WIRK campaign.

Here's the story as best as I can remember it, after talking to the couple and Jordan Rogers.  Jordan refers to himself as Dirksy's contact person.  As much as I'd like to think it is, the WIRK is NOT a reference to or about me.  It's a play on words since Dirk works (i.e. therefore WIRKs) hard etc.  It's a spelling thing, not a couple/stalker/creepy thing.  ****  Although I will admit, Dirk is uber-handsome when his hair is shorter/shaved.  I've been lobbying with my contacts to set up a quick introduction over pizza or something simple, because I'd love to pick his brain for a few minutes.  But enough about that.  I digress...

The website for the Dirk WIRK shirts and the Ghostface Drillah shirt is http://www.newdirkshirt.com/.  If you're a Dirk Nowtizki fan and/or a Dallas Mavericks fan, you should check it out.  As a basketball fan who always find herself defending the purity of the sport and the competition, I find it refreshing that the Mavericks defeated the Miami Heat this year.

I was at the Nike Party during NBA All-Star weekend this year and I remember Dirk playfully giving Kobe Bryant the "L" (i.e. a loser signal) and Kobe smiling and laughing it off.  I thought that was a great moment and amazing foreshadowing...

Dirk isn't a flashy player.  By now, if you watch ESPN you've seen the footage of him in the gym shooting his off-balance fade aways with his shooting coach.  The man works/wirks hard and I think these shirts are a great way to support and show my appreciation of his effort towards the sport.

I don't know him, but Dirk seems like a solid, class act.  I'm happy my last name rhymes with his first.  For the past few NBA playoffs series, on the way to the 2011 NBA Championship I've changed my facebook status to Wirk "hearts" Dirk.  These shirts are beyond cool.  Check them out.

****  Disclaimer:  These are NOT my shirts.  I do not get any money for promoting them.

NBA All-Star Nike Party ~ Q-Tip, Kanye West, Kobe Bryant, etc.

Tickets and parking pass
Every year there are one or two parties that are special during the NBA All-Star weekend. I was fortunate enough to be given two tickets to the Nike Party. **** Thank you to Q-Tip and the Insideplaya!!! The Nike party was supposed to be held at Drai’s which from what I hear is an outdoor spot at the W Hollywood. When I arrived to pick-up the tickets, I was happy to see that the party was being set up in the lobby area (i.e. Living Room) of the hotel. The weather had been unpredictable with rain and wind, so an outdoor setting wouldn’t work.

I invited my friend Teri to join me at the party. There are very few occasions when I can take care of friends who take care of me for basketball, and this was one occasion where I could return the favor. **** If I offer you a ticket and you don’t accept it, because you think you can get a better offer ~ recognize that you’re going to the bottom of my list or will possibly unlisted in the future. I don’t deal well with people who think they can get a better offer, when I’m already offering you the BEST.

I knew Q-Tip would be spinning at the Nike party and that Kobe Bryant would be there. I had no idea that Kanye West would be performing. Talk about a surprise!

As we headed to the party, we passed the Music Box where Kenny “The Jet” Smith was holding his annual NBA All-Star party. There was a large group of people standing outside the venue trying to gain entry. As we approached the W Hollywood, Teri and I traded our tickets for wristbands and went to enter the party. There were 2 tents set-up outside. The first tent was more the metal detectors, and Teri and I skipped that line. The second tent was to get in, and there was a large crowd trying to get in. Teri went straight to the front of that line and I followed her. We passed, Suzy , from the TV show Basketball Wives. She too was trying to get in and skip the line. While waiting a few minutes, I saw Ne-Yo and what looked like 15 of his friends go in.

Dirk Nowitzki
As we went into the party, Teri went in one entrance and I went through another. I ended up going upstairs in an elevator and going across the floor and down the stairs to the main floor. This route gave me a very good lay of the land. As I went down the stairs, I saw Q-Tip, Dirk Nowitzki, Russell Westbrook, Ne-Yo, World Wide Wes, Brandy, Deron Williams and Ron Harper. Finally re-uniting with Teri, we went to the bar and I saw Rick Fox, Eliza Dushku, and Scottie Pippen (i.e. and his wife, Larsa, who will star on Real Housewives of Miami).

With Spike Lee
Spike Lee was in the house as well.

After I got my drink, I went over to see Q-Tip to thank him for giving me the tickets. I patiently waited for him to “break”, but the man was WORKING/WIRKING! He was killing it. Finally, I had my chance to say “Thank you” and formally introduce myself. I’ll never forget his big, warm smile. Of course he went back to work, and I went back to the party,

If you’ve never been to a Nike party, you need to go. Make no mistake, Nike knows how to throw a party. There were passed burgers, sushi, etc. in addition to the open bar. Food is hard to come by when you’re always on the go, so it was great to be able to eat a little bit at the party.

Jalen Rose
I’m not sure what time it was, but my friend Teri who was also planned to hit the ESPN party was sent a text that the ESPN party had ended. Too bad for those folks. The Nike party was just kicking into another gear. For the ESPN folks that could get in to the Nike party, it looks like decided to come on over.

Kobe Bryant
Eventually Kobe Bryant (i.e. and his wife et al) showed up and took the table next to where I was near Q-Tip. Kobe’s Nike film played and Dirk Nowitzki flashed the “big L” (i.e. loser sign towards Kobe, but it was all in good fun). After that, Kanye West took the stage and performed. Kanye’s set was great. However, I must admit that I’m a huge Kanye West fan and I love watching him perform.
Kanye West performing

I saw the party as it was being set up and as the party ended I realized I would also be closing it down. I saw Kevin Durant again this year, and told him “Thunder Up”. He smiled. The last person I saw was Rajon Rondo, so I just reminded him that I saw him in the Bahamas over the summer.

Finally around 4AM, it was time to sleep.

**** Forgive the pictures. I read that no cameras would be allowed, so I left it in my hotel room. Had I known that I wouldn’t have to go through the metal detector, I would’ve brought it in. This is the best that my iPhone could do.

What a FANTASTIC party!

ESPN NBA doubleheader tonight ~ Lakers v Knicks and Suns v Jazz

So Deron Williams is on the ESPN crawl and he says, "I would never force Sloan out of Utah."  Well, of course he has to say something...  I don't know about you, but I'm going to be firmly planted in front of my TV tonight.  Yes, it's going to be a "wild" one.  ESPN is offering me more drama and excitement this evening than a night out with my friends can promise.  To paraphrase the current catchphrase for the NBA, I'm ready for amazing to happen.

Last night the Los Angeles Lakers spoiled it for the Boston Celtics by defeating the Celtics on a night when Ray Allen made history.  Ray Allen surpassed Reggie Miller to become the all-time 3 point leader.  The Lakers surged in the 2nd half to defeat the Celtics, so I'm going to guess that Kobe Bryant et al will be tired tonight.

My prediction for the first game of the doubleheader is that the Knicks play big tonight and defeat the Los Angeles Lakers.  Last night, I was catching up with a friend and he brought up the fact that tonight will be Phil Jackson's last night coaching the Lakers at Madison Square Garden.  Needless to say the game became slightly more intriguing, and I thought about hopping on a train to New York City.

Ultimately, I decided to cool my jets and watch at home.  Phil's last game at the Garden...  I can't believe it.  I'm still hoping Phil pulls a "Brett Favre" and comes back next year.  I'm not ready to see the Zen Master go, and with the Lakers playing the way they are ~ I think it's obvious that the team still needs him.

I think after a day of rest and losing the the Los Angeles Clippers (i.e. read "Blakers", as in Blake Griffin's team) that the New York Knicks will deliver a quality performance and win for their fans.

Enough about that.

Late last night, Steve Nash tweeted about the Phoenix Suns getting to .500.  After last season, if you would've told me that the Suns were going to be a .500 team this close to the NBA All-Star break, I would've called you a liar.  Obviously, I knew that the loss of Amare Stoudemire would be significant.  Seriously, though...  .500?!?!  This is a team that made it to the Western Conference Finals last year.

Regardless tonight's 2nd game of the double headers should be a good one.  I predict that the Suns come out blazing and the the Utah Jazz under perform.  I'm also very curious to hear if the reception for Deron Williams changes from previous games.  I can't feel the pulse in Salt Lake City (i.e. on this side of the country), but I can't imagine that the "Utah Jazz" faithful are thrilled that Jerry Sloan is gone.

The first game is at 8PM.  Order your pizza by 7:30 to make sure it's delivered before the opening tip.

To recap my predictions:
Knicks defeat the Lakers.
Suns defeat the Jazz.

ESPN 30 for 30: Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs the Knicks ~ Watch it

****  I saw this poster when I was in Indianapolis for the Baltimore Ravens v Indianapolis Colts AFC Wildcard game, November 16, 2009.  Before the Colts game, I went with a friend to watch the New Orleans Hornets play the Indiana Pacers.  We only stayed at Conseco Fieldhouse for a short time (i.e. because of the football game).  I never knew I'd need this picture, until tonight.

I just finished watching ESPN's 30 for 30 "Winning time: Reggie Miller vs. the New York Knicks"...

I was never a Reggie Miller fan, but boy did my all into supporting Patrick Ewing and the New York Knicks.  "He's never going to win it for you," was what my dad would say about Patrick Ewing and the Knicks.  Man, til this day I can hear my dad's voice saying that sentence.  He was right, but that's not the point of this post.

The year was 1985...

Originally a Lakers fan, my happiness during the NBA playoffs lived and died with the Knicks in the mid 80s-90s...  ****  Ever since Georgetown lost to Villanova in 1985, I was a Ewing fan.  When Ewing went to the Knicks, I (i.e. my heart and part of my NBA loyalty) went to the Knicks.

As I watched the 30 for 30 episode, I laughed to myself.  The relationship between Cheryl and Reggie Miller remind me of me and my brother.  As an older sister my brother and I would always compete.  I think the fact that we're similar in age forced us to be assertive and put a fire in both of us to succeed.  As I watched, I started to chuckle and sent my brother a text.  It said, "Watching ESPN 30 for 30.  Cheryl and Reggie Miller remind me of you and me.  Is it tough to live in my shadow? Hahaha.  Just kidding!" Needless to say, my brother has yet to reply.

As I watched the episode, so many memories came flooding back.  If you show me a score of 58-70, with the Pacers losing to the Knicks, I know what happens.  Reggie is going to start launching 3s.  ****  As I continued to watch clips of Reggie draining 3s, I started to feel sick.

All the footage from the Knicks and Pacers battles on the court, reminded me of the physicality that used to be part of the game.  How could Rik Smits not be considered soft in those days with warriors on the floor that weren't afraid to make contact on their way to the hole?!?  I'm not going to lie.  Admittedly, watching all the contact, jersey pulling, head butts, etc. has me fired up right now.

1995, 8 points in 9 seconds...  With 18.7 seconds left ~ Reggie wanted a quick 3 and everyone knows it.  The Pacers were down 99-105.  It was Reggie's time.  Reggie shot and drained a 3. On the inbounds play, Reggie stole the ball, went behind the arc, and launched ANOTHER 3.  105-105.  TIED GAME.  John Starks was at the line with a chance to give the Knicks the lead.  John Starks at the line: Clang 1. Starks shoots the 2nd: Clang X2...  Did you hear "clangs 1 and 2"?  Everyone who loved basketball did.

Next thing you knew Reggie Miller was fouled and made both of his free throw.  The Pacers won Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semis with a score of 107-105.  GAME OVER.  "John Starks choked," was the quote I heard from Reggie.  To be honest, he was right.  I was never a fan of John Starks either.  He was way too streaky for me.

Knicks found themselves down 3-1 in the series, but would win Game 5 (i.e. thanks to Ewing and the refs for not calling traveling).  and Game 6.  Game 7 would be at Madison Square Garden, and the winner would face Orlando for the Eastern Conference Finals.

With 5 seconds left.  The Knicks were down 95-97.  Everyone knew the ball was going to Ewing.  Ron Harper inbounded the ball to Ewing.  Ewing turned at the top of the key (i.e. everyone including the big man expected contact).  Instead of going strong to the hoops and even dunking, Ewing laid the ball up and the ball RIMMED OUT...  Ewing went down with his ship, and immediately my heart sank.  ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!  I called my dad who was "watching the game with me", to talk it over.  I was so shocked and inconsolable.  Like I said earlier, my dad always told (i.e. and continues to tell) it to me "straight".  He never believed Ewing would win the title with the Knicks.

Ultimately, the Pacers defeated the Knicks at the Game 7 at the Garden, but it wasn't the Conference Final.  Both the Pacers have yet to win a NBA Championship (i.e. since 1973).  If Ewing couldn't win it all, at least Reggie didn't win one either...

"8 points in 9 seconds,"  wow ~ that phrase still excites and nauseates me.  Absolutely AMAZING.  Here's a clip of the play(s) that I found on Youtube.

Heat are getting worked by the Celtics, and no one in Miami cares

The past 2 weeks, as soon as I land, the first person I've seen on TV is my ex... Thank you, ESPN (i.e. sarcasm)...  I'm loving the fact that the it's the 3rd quarter and the Boston Celtics are beating the Miami Heat.  There are so many empty seats in the American Airlines Arena.  Told you all the bandwagon jumpers would jump off, just as quickly as they jumped on.

The only time Heat fans will support the team is in the finals.  I know.  I was there for Game 5, in 2006, when they were up against the Dallas Mavericks.  Miami won that game (i.e. with a score of 101-100) and eventually went on to win the NBA Championship after winning Game 6.  That season Shaquille O'Neal and Dwyane Wade were both members of the Miami Heat, and Riley was still coaching.

Here are a few pictures I took at the game.

I'm a huge Pat Riley fan

With Dirk Nowitzki at the line,
the crowd chants DA-VID HASSEL-HOFF

Dwyane Wade with a dunk.

Game over

Based on LeBron's strong performance, I wonder if he is going to use his "I can't do it all by myself," speech (ala Cleveland) in the post-game press conference when the Heat lose...

Anyone remember these quotes from Jeff Van Gundy?

"They will break the single-season win record [of 72],” Jeff Van Gundy said. And I think they have a legit shot at the Lakers’ 33-game [winning] streak [in 1971-72], as well. And only the Lakers have even a remote shot at beating them in a playoff series. They will never lose two games in a row this year."

Hey, Jeff Van Gundy, guess what?!?!  The Heat just lost two games in a row!!!  How about them apples?!?!  So much for your prediction, but hey ~ at least you had the nerve to take a shot! :-P

ESPN 30 for 30: Once Brothers ~ Politics, Friendship, and Basketball

Tonight I watched the ESPN 30 for 30 "Once Brothers" feature and I have so much on my mind that I fel the need to post.  I saw Vlade Divac this summer in Las Vegas, when I was watching NBA Summer League.  I never thought I'd think twice about Divac this year, much less remember Drazen Petrovic.

Drazen Petrovic and Vlade Divac were friends and former teammates for "unified" Yugoslavia, but civil war between the Serbians and the Croatians divided them.  Other notables on that team are Dino Radja and Toni Kukoc.  I wasn't familiar with the specifics of Divac and Petrovic's relationship, until I watched this show.  I'm not Croatian nor Serbian, so I'm not very familiar with the history of the two countries.  I wasn't familiar with the incident that occurred in 1990 World Championships in Argentina (i.e. Divac's reaction to a fan approaching with a Croatian flag) when Yugloslavia defeated Arvydas Sabonis and the Soviet Union for the gold.

What I do remember are the Dayton Peace Acccords that happened in 1995.  I remember the news that the Presidents were meeting in Dayton, because those talks occurred only minutes away from the houses where I grew up.  I remember the Peace Accords put an "end " to the fighting between Croatia and Serbia.  Aside from integrating the political angles, it was enlightening to see the human story behind Divac and Petrovic's relationahip.

Divac was drafted into the NBA in 1989.  According to Wikipedia, "The 1989 NBA Draft has been regarded as one of the worst drafts in NBA history...  Though the draft produced talented players such as Shawn Kemp...eight of the top ten picks were considered busts, including the first two picks Pervis Ellison and Danny Ferry."  ****  HAHA.  Thank you, Wikipedia.

I don't remember Petrovic's entry into the league, but I do remember his premature exit from our lives.  I remember learning that Drazen Petrovic died in a car accident in Germany.  I saw it on the news.  I remember his star shining while he played with the New Jersey Nets.  He had so much promise and talent.  I remember feeling the loss, even though I wasn't a Nets fan.  In the ESPN feature they talk about Petrovic and how he had no problem going against Michael Jordan.  Petrovic had a quick release and ice in his veins.

Here are some clips compiled of Jordan and Petrovic that I found on youtube.

Petrovic and Divac's performances on the world's basketball stage and successes in the NBA helped to pave the way for other Europeans (e.g. Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Peja Stojakovic, Pau Gasol, Dirk Nowitzki) to enter the league.  Human relationships are tough at times, but when you add politics, friendship can often be strained.  They say never to talk about money, religion, or politics.  Politics can enter our lives in the most subtle of ways, but even the keen eye of someone "in the know" can discern the Serbian three-finger salute for what it is, as opposed to "just" a cheer after a 3-pointer is drained...  I remember watching a Sacramento Kings game in the late 1990s, where the salute was given after the shot.  I was watching with someone from Europe who knows basketball.  As soon as he saw it, he said "Whoa!".  What I thought was a simple celebration for a 3-pointer or a clutch shot, meant much more.  I had no idea what I saw meant more than it did, but he knew (i.e. that for some people) the message would be clear.

Don't believe me?  Seems as though he wasn't the only one who picked up on the messaging.  Here's one article I found on the subject:  http://www.newsreview.com/sacramento/content?oid=14137.  Nevertheless, I don't want to talk politics.  I do want to let you know though, that if  you haven't seen the ESPN 30 for 30, "Once Brothers", see it.

In fact, if you aren't watching these shows, you really should catch up and maybe even pick up the gift set.

Further, if you're a Drazen Petrovic fan, I just noticed that you can pick up his jersey.

Sick of LeBron ~ You probably avoid ESPN, but can you avoid the Internet?

If you're sick of LeBron you probably avoided ESPN the past few days and definitely didn't watch "The Decision", but brace yourself if you're hitting the Internet any time soon...

Consider yourself warned.

ESPN.com

CNN.com

NBA.com

NBA.com again

MSN.com

Yahoo.com

Weather.com

Actually, I'm surprised that Weather.com doesn't have LeBron James on it's home page considering the shit storm that is going on in Northeast Ohio right now.  I feel your pain, Cleveland.

LeBron slated to announce his decision, Thursday at 9 on ESPN

According to ESPN.com news services, on Thursday at 9PM, LeBron James is slated to announce his decision with regard to his NBA free agency in an hour long ESPN special.  Here is the article from ESPN.  If you prefer to copy and paste it into another window, here you go: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5359255

Are you going to watch the hour long show?    Who do you think will win the LeBron lottery?

If you believe Twitter, he's going to have 5 headbands and pick one of them.

For the record, I've always said he'll stay in Cleveland and play for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Ron Artest's NBA Championship post-game interview and celebration

So many people are so quick to hate and not congratulate.  Have you see, Ron Artest's post-game interview after the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics in Game 7 for the NBA Championship?  The sincerity in his emotions and the joy in his actions and his voice are visibly and audibly genuine.  I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the biggest Ron Ron fan, but I cannot help but like him after watching him come up huge in a couple of games in this series and after this interview.

Sports are one of the few forums where men will actually let down their guard and let out their human vulnerabilities.  Men can play the game like boys and still come out champions!

Want to know what happens after the interview, when Ron went to "the Club".  Well, according to the following ESPN article by Sam Alipour, Ron Ron went out to "the Club" in full uniform and then eventually gave his uniform to Chris Brown.  Why not?!?!  It's Ron Ron...  He's come a LONG way from the Pistons-Pacers brawl.  He's a Champion now.

Great meeting ~ USA defeats Algeria, Donovan's goal and Saifi slaps and is punched

I just wrapped up my "meeting" with Algeria and all I can say is WOW...  It took about 91 minutes, but Landon Donovan came through for USA in the 2010 FIFA World Cup game against Algeria.  Now I'm not saying that there was a complete work stoppage (i.e. think Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate Sudden Death, circa US Open 2008), but the noise level has increased tremendously now that the USA v Algeria game is over.  If you missed the meeting request, USA won 1-0.

The population around here has gone from 4 to at least 30 by now.  Basically, it was an "all-hands" team building session and morale is up in the office as a result.

I wasn't able to join the meeting until the last 8 minutes, but from what I understand USA scored twice, but had their goals taken away with two offsides calls.  De ja vu...  Just saying.

With about 15 mins left in the "meeting", my friend gave me an update that it was tied at 0 (i.e. the Bears were winning <--  Ferris Bueller reference).  He told me that USA had to win to advance, since it looked like Slovenia was going to lose to England.

I "videoconferenced" into the meeting to watch the final goal and see the USA team hold the lead.  Meeting over and it's lunch time...

I wonder what people will be talking about?!?!

By the way, have you seen Landon Donovan's ESPN commercial yet?  If not, here you go.

And of course there's more to the story for Algeria...  Have you seen this Fanhouse article?  It appears that after the USA v Algeria match, Algeria's Rafik Saifi slapped a female reporter.  In response, female reporter, Asma Halimi, punched him in the mouth.  Nice, huh...

Can't we all just get along?

ESPN 30 for 30: O.J. Simpson's Ford Bronco car chase - 16 years ago today

On June 17, 1994 O.J. Simpson was declared a "fugitive of justice" and drove his white Ford Bronco down the freeway in LA.

I didn't catch the episode, but ESPN has a new 30 for 30 documentary out that night describes it "all" http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=5287804.

Where were you the night of O.J.'s car chase?

I know exactly where I was.  I was in Bulger Hall waiting for the guys to get ready so we could go out, but no one was leaving because they thought O.J. was going to die that night.

I never really paid attention to football O.J.  I only really knew him as "Naked Gun" O.J.  Oh well.

I can't believe it's been 16 years.

Twas the Thursday before the Super Bowl in South Beach...

Eased into the day today and headed over to 12th and Ocean to meet some friends of mine for lunch.  This intersection is very close to where you can walk to the ESPN, ESPN Radio, NFL network, CBS Early Morning show sets etc.  Part of Ocean Drive is blocked to traffic, and the atmosphere was similar to a tame Bourbon Street...  People are walking around in their favorite teams' attire and soaking in the experience.  Sponsorship is everywhere on the street, and the most noticeable sponsor is Tide (i.e. aside from the huge Pepsi sound stage)...

Saw Sean Merriman walking off the set when I got to the meeting spot.  I didn't know who he was, until my friend told me.  Yeah ~ it's football.  Unless you're wearing a jersey and actually playing on the field during game day ~ I probably won't recognize you.  I guess that's how it is for all helmeted athletes, now that I think about it.  I didn't recognize Mike Modano (i.e. Dallas Stars) either when he came over to chat with members of the crew I was with when I was in Miami for the NBA Finals, in 2006.

Lunched at The Tides with friends and took in the scene.  The weather was comfortable, not too hot and not too cold.  It was actually perfect.

After lunch we went back to the ESPN set to watch part of the Pardon the Interruption taping.  We missed the taping of the Deion segment, but c'est la vie.  Watching the taping got a little boring so went to check out the other production tents, but there seemed to be nothing going on at the NFL Network and other ESPN set.  We went to watch the rest of the PTI taping from inside the gate and behind the set, and I was introduced to J.A. Adande.

I found the equipement interesting...

Water break

Catching up with Brian, while our friend works...

Taping finished and we all rolled back to get some drinks, kill time, and catch up before everyone disbanded ~ some had to go to dinner, clean up, and/or wanted to catch other games on tv before going out "for real".  It's only Thursday and some of us just got to town, so we're still settling into the scene.

Incidentally, we were talking music, and I've determined that Norah Jones is the female James Taylor.

I ran into the guys from the plane last night, walking on Ocean Drive, on my way back to my brother's place.  Very random.

According to the crew I was wih, the NFL Players Association and the NFL Players party is combined this year and being held at the Viceroy.

The NFL Commissioner's party is tomorrow night in Laudy and I'll be there.
For all you gamblers out there, I got a text from my friend that the line moved to Indy -4.5...  I like the Colts even more now..  My guess is that it moved because people are scared that Freeney won't play and money started moving to the Saints...

Ok - that's it for now...

Cleveland is up 49-45 over the Heat.  GO CAVS!!!

I'm hungry...  Off to dinner ~ Argentinian steakhouse ~ LOOK OUT :-P

Celtics don't scare me, and I still need a ticket to the Super Bowl.... GO COLTS!!!!

List of thoughts because I'm too tired to write paragraphs right now.

Basketball
1.  Yesterday, Pat's dad couldn't go to the game Celtics v Wizards game, so I got called up.  Thanks, Pat. He's a Celtics fan so I compromised and wore lime green.  I will not put a Celtics hat on my head.

2.  I said to bet the Celtics -5.  If you did, you WON.  The Celtics didn't really play until the 4th Q, so sorry if you had to sweat it out.

Final score

2.  The Celtics are not scary.  As a Cavs fan, they'll have to show me more, before I BEGIN to consider them a credible threat in the East.  Garnett is definitely NOT back, even though he's playing.
3.  The only scare of the game happened when Paul Pierce went down, but he got back up and continued playing ~ eventually.

Paul Pierce getting treated on the bench.

4.  The Wizards are running some sort of promotion now through Chik Fil-A.  Chik Fil-A picks a player on the visiting team, and if that player misses both of his free throws, everyone in the arena gets a free sandwich.  Thank you, Big Baby Davis ~ for your poor shooting and my free lunch tomorrow (i.e. if I can drag myself out of my apartment and into the cold).
5. Can't watch another Wizards game for a long time.  Enough is a enough.  I walk out of the Verizon Center stressed out, and this is not good.
6.  I caught/picked up one of those free give away balls that they throw out into the crowd.  I was not standing and waving for it like a 6 year old child.  This proves you can get free stuff by sitting and "playing it cool".

Yeah, I like free stuff

6.  Watching ESPN Sportscenter, and I'm disgusted.  You'd think Kobe Bryant walked on water last night.  Yes, I get it.  He's the all-time leading scorer for the franchise.  However, in my opinion, he's NOT the best Laker ever.  If you make me choose between Kobe or Magic ~ I'll take Magic any day.  To me, Magic is the Lakers' heart.
7.  Working on plans for NBA All-Star weekend.
8.  I'm not Oprah and the last thing I want to do is read/sell books, but here's one for you.  I came across my copy recently, and it started me thinking. If you've never read "Homecourt Advantage" by Rita Ewing and Crystal McCrary ~ check it out. It reads quickly and will give you a good idea of what it's like to be a WAG in the NBA.

Football
1.  Headed to Miami on Wednesday night/Thursday morning for the Super Bowl.  I need/want to be on the ground for all the festivities.
2.  Dwight Freeney and a torn ligament?!?!  Oh no!!!!  Dwight, please play!!!!!  GO COLTS!!!!
3.  I need a ticket to the Super Bowl.  Still.

Other
1.  Working on a logo for TheWirk.com
2.  Trying to come up with other sports ideas/events for this blog.
3.  Apologies to my trivia team, who I ditched to go to the game last night.
4.  Shout out to Fogdog and the Bryant brothers who I saw/ran into while at the game.
